PRESENT DAY— MARIA’S POV
When Alessandro didn't return after twenty minutes, Maria gave him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he'd gotten lost. After all, these red rocks were not forgiving when it came to taking a wrong turn; everything tended to blend in with each other.
But when twenty minutes turned into forty-five minutes, worry crept up on Maria. What if he needed help? There were all sorts of wild creatures out there, and what if one had managed to attack him?
She grew very still, listening to all that surrounded her to gauge whether something was lurking in the darkness and coming for her next. However, all she heard was the continual chirp of the crickets and rustling of the wind.
Maria took a couple of steps forward and risked calling out in a loud voice, "Alessandro?"
