Chapter 25: City Ruins

MARIA’S POV

"This isn't the market," Desdemona's harsh voice cut through Maria's train of thought. Maria popped her head up from the rubble she'd been sifting through surprised to find the perfectly curated Desdemona standing before her. Seriously, did this woman ever have a bad hair day?!

It was the first time Maria had seen her in pink. But this shade played beautifully with Desdemona's dark-colored skin. The skirt she wore today stretched down to the abandoned stone ruins that Maria was currently digging through. It seemed like an insult to the outfit to be among so much dishevelment.

"I got distracted." Maria tried. Knowing it was a pitiful answer the minute Desdemona grunted her disapproval. She waited for Desdemona to demand that she leave. However, instead, Desdemona ran her hands along the walls of falling brick, her eyes glazing over in a far-off manner.

"Do you know what this used to be?" Desdemona asked.
