Chunin Exams

Boruto was with his team mates Mitsuki and Sarada. Konohamaru sensei was nowhere to be seen.

It was one of those days where everything went slowly and dragged out.  The three of them sat sharing a large plate of mitarashi dango staring at the clouds floating by. None of them were in the mood to train or do anything at all.

They were fed up with the various D and E rank missions they received for the past two weeks. It had been three months since they became genin but they were still stuck here.

"Yo~ Sarada~"

It was Akimichi Chōchō and her team. She grabbed one of the mitarashi dango off their plate and ordered another plate at the same time.

Inojin and Shikidai sat themselves on the wooden porch.

"No missions for you today too?"

"Nah, Moegi sensei is off somewhere with Kohonamaru sensei and Udon sensei."

"So Metal and the rest should be here too I guess."

And they did come. Iwabee And denki were two new faces unrelated to the original Rookie Nine's kids. So although they were acquainted, they weren't as familiar with each other as the seven of them.

They all sat and chilled together, wasting time afterall, they had almost all the time in the world.

............................

All the Jonin of Konoha who weren't on duty were assembled and waiting for Naruto. Shikamaru was organising some documents and placed them neatly in the centre of the table. Soon Naruto arrived and took his seat.

"I called you today to brief you about the upcoming Chunin exams. This year it will take place in our Konohagakure. Next month, the last date for registration will end and we will have the exams ten days later.

Check in with the exam department to collect the forms for Genins you deem eligible to participate from your teams."

Naruto picked up the documents in front of him.

"Team Ebisu will be in charge of coordination.

Team Asuma will- wait.."

Naruto turned back to Shikamaru and whispered, "We're still using these old team names?"

"Yeah, makes it easier for documentation. Numbers are confusing sometimes."

"Okay."

Narut continued to delegate tasks to all the teams, new and old and gave some more instructions about the hotel bookings for the Kages, menus, venues and he gave special attention to the teams in charge of setting up evacuation routes.

Ever since the first Chunin exam he attended, which, by the way, ended in disaster,  security was a hundred times tighter during the Chunin exam phase. For the past twenty one years, no incident has occurred to any Chunin exam held in any of the nations. And he hoped to keep it that way. This was the first Chunin exam he was hosting s Hokage and it had to be without any hiccups.

The Jonin were half excited- half worried about the exams. The Jonin assigned to set the questions were placed with seals to not disclose the questions.

Everyone dispersed soon and took a chance to rest because they would soon be so busy their feet wouldn't touch the ground.

The next day, Team Konohamaru set out on a mission to capture a rogue panda.

Boruto rushed ahead through the foliage leaving his team mates behind.

"Kage bunshin no jutsu!"

Four clones of him materialised near him and they landed near the panda's feeding spot.

"Sheesh, someone's a real messy eater."

The panda was enraged at his comment and growled.

Sarada and Mitsuki landed beside him.

"Don't let your guard down, Boruto. It might look like a cute panda but it's a violent bear!" Warned Sarada.

"It's nothing. Come on, it's just a weakass panda."

"Pandas come under the classification of bears, you dimwit!"

Mitsuki interrupted, "I think we have more pressing matters at hand. Our priority is to subdue this bear-panda and get it to Konohamaru sensei's place."

He made the first move seeing the panda about to attack. He bolted and extended his arm that stretched like a piece of elastic under the panda and wrapped around its hind leg, effectively tripping it.

"Shanna-" began Sarada but Boruto beat her to it. His clones kicked the panda's face and stomach and it flew and collapsed into a heap.

"Told ya it was a weakass one."

"Tch."

"As expected of the Seventh Hokage's son," commented Mitsuki, "and the Fourth Hokage's grandson. It seems Boruto is destined to become hokage."

Sarada was irked. "I'm the one who'll become Hokage!" She declared forcefully.

Konohamaru entered the scene leisurely. He raised his hand and a small scroll shot out of a mysterious device from his wrist. He grabbed it and placed it to the ground nd activated it.

"Kageshibari no Jutsu!"

A long trail of shadow extended from the scroll and bound up the panda.

The owner of the panda soon arrived with his sons.

Boruto prodded the panda's snout with a stick.

Konohamaru spoke to the owner. "The Retrieval team will be arriving shortly."

The owner thanked him.

Sarada asked Konohamaru curiously. "Sensei, that technique was... the Nara clan's Shadow Bind technique, right?"

"Oh this?"

He showed them the device on his wrist.

"This is, the new ninja apparatus?"

They crowded around him examining this new technology. It consisted of two parts. A wrist shorter thingy and small "bullets".

The bullets were actually really tiny scrolls.

"This is a prototype. They asked us to test it out on the field to gather intel. What you saw was Shikamaru's Shadow Bind."

He demonstrated to them by inerting a rasengan into a regular sized scroll that shrunk into the size of a bullet. He inserted it into the device and shot it out by making a handseal.

The rasengan zoomed out into the distance.

"Wow!"

"Amazing!"

"Anyone can use that tool?"

"Yeah! It doesn't even require chakra."

Boom!

Unfortunately for Konohamaru, the Rasengan landed on a villager's house.

"Well, I suppose it doesn't matter if you have chakra or not if your aim's terrible."

Naruto was busy all these days giving interviews and directing everyone around.

Today was one of those days he was required to sit in the office. Team Konohamaru was in front of him reporting the completion of their mission.

"How was your mission?"

"The mission was a piece of cake, Dad! I could have completed it on my own!"

"It's 'Hokage' or 'Seventh', not 'Dad'. Also, For any Ninja, team work and guts is of vital importance..."

Both father and son began arguing in the office, niether listening to each other.

Smash!

Boruto slammed his hands onto Naruto's desk. "Enough! For any father it's imortant to remember... Do I have your attention now? Today js Himawari's birthday. If you dare forget you'll have me to answer!"

"Pardon the intrusion."

"Oh, Katasuke."

Katasuke was a middle aged man with square glasses and an equally square frame.

"As the Head of the Ninja Science and Weapons Development,  I have a humble request for the Hokage."

"What is it?"

"In the next Chunin exams, would you be so gracious as to allow the usage of 'Scientific Ninja Tool's ?" Said Katasuke as he pointed to the device on Konohamaru's wrist.

He began a long speil about the advantages of the tools and kept flattering it in beautiful ways.

"Can't do."

"Huh?"

Naruto looked seriously at Katasuke.

"The Chunin exam is a place for Genin to grow. Not a stage to show off."

Naruto's firm tone made Katasuke shrink.

"Is that so? Alright then I'll take my leave.." and he slinked away.

As he left, he made eye contact with Boruto.

"Your weakass era is coming to an end, Dad!" Boruto said as he left too.

"Oi, Boruto!" Reprimanded Konohamaru.

Slam! The door shut.

"Dammit, I wanted to hand him the Chunin application forms before he..."

Naruto sighed.

Naruto dismissed everyone from his office, rubbed his eyes and got back to work.

Outside the Hokage building, Boruto took a modified gaming chip Katasuke handed over to him.

"Thanks as always! Do the next game too, okay?"

"It will me my pleasure. By the way, Young master, will you be partaking in the upcoming exams too?"

"Wha? No way!" Boruto said, completely disinterested in the matter. He began to leave.

"Oh dear, that's such a shame," Katasuke adjusted his glasses, "Everyone is so eager to see your strength and talents..."

"Especially your father."

Boruto stopped. And Katasuke's mouth widened into a smile.

At the training grounds, Moegi held up the Chunin application forms. The rookies on her group were distracted. Chōchō was munching away, Shikidai was yawning away and Inojin was yelling at Chōchō for nit listening.

"Sigh. It's time to put these to use." Moegi pulled out two letters. "Here, letters. I received them from Temari-San and Ino-san."

"Mother?!"

The kids were surprised. They tore open the letters and read them.

"They told me to hand it to you if you get cold feet about the exam."

Inojin and Shikidai worriedly read through the letters as Chōchō peeked over their shoulder.

Their faces gradually drained of blood and paled.

"What's up?" Asked Chōchō.

"We gotta- we gotta do our best in the exam Inojin," said Shikidai terrified.

"Ye-yeah...you're right."

"Damn, we forgot we were supposed to meet up with Boruto."

"Oh yeah! See ya later, Sensei. We'll fill out the application forms and hand it in tomorrow. "

The two of them ran off.

"What's gotten into them?"

'Those must have been pretty persuasive letters,' thought Moegi.

Author's Note-

I didn't have as much fun writing this chapter because I was forced to write it word for word. But what can I do? I don't want to deviate too much from Canon. Oh well, I suppose I'll only write it like this for the Chunin exam arc. After that I might introduce Kawaki and his backstory but I'll change things here and there. Nothing more than these two things will be included from Boruto: next gen. Once these two bits are completely written down, I'll have full control over the flow of the story again. I'm excited for the Chunin exams to get over. I didn't want to write this but if I don't I'll mess up the timeline.

Thankyou for reading.
