Chapter 17

Asabea waited forever for Gyebi and Asabea to come by, her fingers supporting her chin as she did so, counting the minutes and hours as they went by.

" Mum, we no longer have any stock and I don't have the contact numbers of my friends who came around recently. What do we do?"

" Can you do me a favour and go ask our neighbours whether they have extra food?"

" The police will send me back home, Mummy. They almost took me to their camp the last time they saw me roaming around the streets."

" They won't do so if they know you're roaming the streets because of food. You know we can't survive a day without food, don't you?"

" Mum. They won't listen. All they'll do is ask me to go back home. I thought this situation would make them more humane, but it looks like they haven't changed at all. Anyway, Mum, you're frightening me. Grand Nana keeps telling me you're not too well and may not survive for long."

" She's right."
