I woke up alone, but I wasn’t concerned. I sat up and rolled out of bed. Patara had left bed some time ago based on how cold her side of the bed was. I wandered downstairs to the first floor. The new house had taken a bit of time to build right on the border between the old shifter and human territories, but I was happy with it. The house was nothing like the gothic house that I had grown up in or the simple white of the cottage.
I wondered for a moment how my mother and father would have liked the new house.
Ethan was seated at the table as I entered, eating with his usual speed. He looked up and gave me a small, shy smile.
“Hi, Dad.”
“Hi, Ethan.” I didn’t think there was a feeling in the world that would compare to hearing him call me dad.
