Chapter 48: Geien

I entered The Betwixt and immediately second guessed my decision to come. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before; shadows clung to everything and rays of sunlight danced on the fog that seemed to come from every direction all at once.

Before me was a great door made of onyx and inlaid with pearls and fine veins of gold. I wasn't positive, but I assumed it was the door I was searching for. Slowly, I approached it and raised my hand to knock before stopping.

Did I really want to knock like some commoner?

Just then, the door unlatched and creaked open. A waft of smoke came out, some sort of incense that had floral notes to it. That was as much an invitation as any, so I pushed the door open the rest of the way and eased my way in.

Inside was a palace made of the same materials as the door; onyx, pearl and gold. It was lavish without being over the top, simple without being bare. I stepped in and clicked the large door shut behind me.
