To say I was confused wouldn't be completely accurate. I had read enough stories to know about reincarnation but I had expected some more fanfare. Not any fireworks or marching mind you, but at least a little more than being dropped on my ass with a piece of paper in my hand.
And it's just a plain lined paper, not even some fancy manuscript, parchment or scroll. Now don't get it confused I don't see myself as a particularly important person, but somethings you just feel owed when you've been hit by a truck while you were taking your nightly poop. Oh well I'm not mad.
Deciding it was time I begin reading the letter.
"To whom it might concern. Blah blah blah blah-"
My eyebrow twitched slightly and I let out a deep sigh. Not even enough effort to actually write everything?
"You have been reincarnated into the show you were watching while you were relieving yourself. Be glad I don't send you to the pits of hell or abyss of purgatory for taking my time.
Here are you boons:
1: infinite inventory, only inanimate objects or dead organisms. Pokéballs containing Pokémon will be allowed.
2: Basic food, water and necessities are stored inside already. Camping gear and the like included. Pokéballs, potions, berries, as well as money. Be grateful.
3: I even took the liberty to get you squared away to get a free Pokémon from the famous Professor Oak.
Live longer this time mortal."
As I finished reading the last word, my eyebrow didn't even get to twitch for the umpteenth time as the paper faded out. Standing up I dust myself off with a sigh.
"Well, it could be worse. Might as well take advantage of this. I do love Pokémon after all."
Turning to the path that leads up to the lab I walk up and knock on the door. A voice comes from my right and I see a face on a small screen. It was Professor Oak.
"Oh! Roman, I see you're early. Come in, come in and we'll get you your Pokémon and Pokédex." Before I could even respond the screen went black and the door opened.
"Haa, I feel like I'm dancing to everyone else's tune right now." I sigh with a shake of my head as I enter.
The walls were decorated with plaques and photos of people and humans alike. Many were taken in remote regions with dates at the bottom. I saw a couple with group picture of the Pokémon camps that Oak holds and I recognized some key people from the show.
Ash, Gary and Serena were easily recognized but another made me pause and stare at it in surprise. A younger version of myself was in the picture. Seeing myself in the picture i find a reflective glass and see that I'm still the same as I was before I was sent here.
My black hair was cut short but messy tucked into a purple cap that had a tiger on it originally but now has black stitched Gengar with a vicious smile and red eyes. My blue eyes pierced out from the bottom of the hat that contrasted my slightly bored expression.
It's something I had to learn to do at a young age due to my appearance. My facial features were particularly sharp and people used to say I looked like a villain even though I could never muster up enough effort for all the schemes they get in to. So a bored, listless expression helped that and made life that much easier.
My shirt was the same dark purple of my my hat and fit snug to my body and I wore a gray zip up hoodie with the sleeves rolled to the elbows, hood up and zipper undone. And I was wearing a pair of khaki pants that I usually wore to school due to uniforms. A pair of black tennis shoes stuck out the bottom with white Pokéball designs adorning the sides.
Taking the hat off I run my hand through my hair front to back and fit my hat back over the smoothed back hair. Turning I begin walking toward where I felt I should go. A lot felt the same from the show but also different, though it was similar enough to find my way to the door where Professor Oak was waiting.
"There you are Roman, I was beginning to think you got lost again." Oak said smiling.
"Sorry Professor, just can't believe it's time to get my Pokémon." I lied smoothly as I walked forward to the machine holding the 3 Pokéballs.
"Can I go ahead and pick?" I ask tentatively, feeling my excitement rising as I looked at them.
"Of course! Gary already chose Squirtle, Sera chose Bulbasaur, so you really only have one option left." I nodded and showed a slight disappointment on my face, but actually I was happy with this. Charmander is a good Pokémon and there are plenty of Pokémon in the area I'll be able to easily catch with Charmander.
"Then I choose Charmander." I said confidently as I grabbed the Pokéball. I felt a jolt go through my body as I held it in my hand, the ball rocked slightly and popped open revealing Charmander. He looked just how he did in the show, none of the realistic earth style lizard characteristics.
That made me feel at ease as I didn't know what I'd do if I can across Spinarack or Ariados down the line if they actually looked like spiders.
Charmander stared at me and tilted his head slightly causing me to smile warmly. I reached out a hand pat his head softly, eliciting an almost purr from him.
"Nice to meet you Charmander, my name is Roman and I'll be your trainer from now on." Charmander let out a cry with a nod before rubbing his head into my outstretched hand.
"Greedy little one aren't you?" I chuckle and pick him up into my arms and turn to Oak.
"I think we're ready Professor." Oak nods and turns toward a computer monitor.
"If you would Roman, Stand in that box there so I can take your picture for your Pokédex ID." Moments later I'm standing there with the Pokédex in my hand showing a picture of me holding Charmander and little description of me was at the side.
"Roman Saelle
Age: 18
Hometown: Pallet
First Pokémon: Charmander
Verified by Professor Oak"
There was more going in-depth on my height, 6 foot 2, and then my features as well. Also a slot that said 'First in Oak's Pokémon Summer and Winter Camp, egg recipient.' My eyes focused in on that and I looked up to Oak who was holding an egg inside an incubator.
"Here's the egg you won from your years and dedication to the lab Roman. Though I must say I was surprised when you originally chose this one and you stayed firm in your decision through the years so here is your Chansey Egg" Professor Oak handed me the incubator which immediately placed into the opening of my hoodie and zipped it up close. Charmander seemed a little miffed at being set down but got over it when he saw the egg.
"Thank you Professor I couldn't ask for a better gift." I said wholeheartedly but he just shook his head.
"It's no gift young Roman, you earned that egg fairly. Now go and behind your journey. I'm sure you'll accomplish great things." I nodded and turned to Charmander.
"C'mon Charmander, let's go."
With that we walked out of the lab back down the slope and stood on the dirt path when I saw a figure running in the distance. Must be Ash, but I don't really feel like meeting him just yet. Besides I want to reach Viridian before the thunderstorm as well as the spearows.
Deciding I turn toward the way out of pallet and begin walking, as I do so I check my new inventory. It wasn't said how to open it, but just thinking about it caused a transparent screen to appear in my vision with a grid marked by symbols and labeled by words for each box.
The first box held Pokéballs and the others were filled with the food and other things listed in the letter. My eyes widened at the sheer number of thing inside until I saw what made even happier. An electric bicycle that charged by pedaling or electricity. It was perfect, I didn't want to walk everywhere, but I also didn't want a car or some larger vehicle that would prevent me from enjoying the outside.
I immediately pulled it out and saw that it had a basket on front so I put Charmander inside and checked the charge. It had a full battery and would last 5 hours of continuous riding before needing to be pedal charged. If I got an electric Pokémon though I could have an infinite charge, it could double as their training too.
Oops I got a bit of creepy grin from imagining the easy life. I need to embrace this new life a little more and do things I normally wouldn't have. So I switched off the power and put it pedal mode and placed Charmander back on the ground.
"No easy road or us Charmander, you need training and so do I. I'll be riding the bike and you run along side me, as a Charizard you aren't as fast on your feet and your fairly slow in this form too. Which means we're going to fix that, being quicker means you can hit first and we're always going to hit first if we can help it.
Look I'm gonna wear this weight vest and leg weights, you wear these Pokémon ones. If we want to get stronger this is the way."
I finished my speech as I slipped the weight vest on under my clothes and the leg weights under my pants I even found some arm bands that looked like athletic bands but actually weighed a couple pounds each.
"Char char!" He cried and balled his hands up and let out a roar. Though it sounded more like a squeal, I let him have his moment.
"Right! As a famous bushy browed person would have said 'Youth!'" Though I shivered as soon as I said that and sent a thank you prayer to whoever sent me here Instead of Naruto.
Shaking that off I hop on the bike and begin pedaling, Charmander following on my right side down the dirt path. This was just the beginning.
