He made it so that the original soul of the body can stay, and he could take over it after knocking the soul out. Playing with souls was already common place by the 8th Grade for Dark Magicians. Zombies were one of those, a way to take over the soul which rendered the body and its senses useless. The attack being one directed at the soul was another reason why the zombification was not something one could counter.

"Mylene," I said. "There is a chance that the Dark King knows about you too."

"You said that before." 

Her tone had turned serious in an instant. How perplexing.

"I know of the spell he uses. I am sure his part was dormant and was turned active recently in that girl's body. Back then, he would have to get his hands on the vessel personally to access the memories from when he was dormant. But there is a chance that he managed to overcome that shortcoming in the time since I knew of it."
