He Can Do Anything

Laney looked at Richard with an unreadable expression once they were outside. "You changed the subject on purpose back there. Why?"

"I could tell you were uncomfortable," he said diplomatically, choosing not to go into his suspicions as to why. 

"Sorry about that. She normally doesn't act that way but she is very attached to Greg. She's been left behind so many times in her life by important people that she's sensitive about it."

That would match what he knew about the situation with her biological mother. It didn't excuse her behavior but it did explain it somewhat.

"I see."

"She really is a great kid! She handles all of her doctors' visits and whatnot like a champ and rarely complains about anything. But she is still a kid and kids need consistency. I just wish she hadn't gone and gotten attached to someone who doesn't owe us anything," Laney said tiredly.
