Bai Xiaoxue (2)

The tiny girl continued looking at him wistfully. She was dirty and her dark-brown hair was messy. Her discoloured dress was torn to the point of being unrecognizable, seemingly more like rags.

Bai Feng's sensitive ears heard a growl from her tummy. The girl was badly malnourished.

"Do you... Want one?" Bai Feng offered a chip to her.

Hesitantly, she slowly approached and took the chip, stuffing it into her mouth and chewing ravenously.

It was the most delicious thing she had ever tasted. Salty, savoury, and slightly spicy that all danced around on her little tongue.

"I'm Bai Feng. What's your name?" Bai Feng asked. The little girl didn't answer, only shaking her head.

"Do you have a name?" She shook her head again, making Bai Feng feel sorry for her.

He then met her large, pretty eyes that contained a mixed emotion of pleading and happiness, which Bai Feng assumed meant she wanted more chips.

"You can have it." Feeling sorry for her, Bai Feng handed her the bag and prepared to leave.

His living situation was already considered quite hard, and Bai Feng didn't want another mouth to feed. Being a little girl, it was more likely that someone would take pity and adopt her.

The girl's attention was completely focused on the Leshi chips, furiously munching down on the delicious snack. Suddenly, she lifted her head to see that Bai Feng was already walking away.

Bai Feng turned to see the little girl still following him. She still had that same pleading look, soaking in the rain with him.

"I'm sorry, but you can't come with me." He shook his head, trying to be stern. However, his face immediately softened when she began to cry pitifully while hugging onto the bag of chips.

Seeing the scene, something occurred within him that he couldn't describe.

Bai Feng had no idea on what the feeling in his heart was. There was just something special about the little girl that made him feel a connection with her.

Walking over to her, Bai Feng bent down on a knee and placed his hands over her small shoulders. "Look. I'm also really poor and you'll only face hardships with me."

He hesitated. "We might have to go to sleep with our bellies growling. Maybe some days we won't even get to eat at all."

"Are you sure you want to follow me?" Bai Feng stared deeply into her eyes.

He froze when the little girl suddenly hugged him, dropping the bag of chips and nodding in his chest. Something inside Bai Feng stirred and he couldn't understand what he was feeling.

Instinctively, he raised a hand and began to softly stroke her hair. The little girl's soft whimpers finally made him give up, and Bai Feng decided to take good care of her.

"Let's go then, you'd better not regret it though." Picking up the bag of chips that were already partially soggy, Bai Feng took her hand and led her home. "Let's hurry, or we both might get sick."

It was a picturesque scene. A young boy and girl hand in hand, with the boy doing his best to shield her against the heavy rain.

...

"Even now, you're still a crybaby." Bai Feng grinned as he continued to comfort Bai Xiaoxue.

"Hmph. Stinky brother." The young girl broke free and began to pummel at his chest in mock anger.

Chuckling, he held his hands up defensively while giving her the roll of toilet paper. "Alright, alright. I'm sorry."

Bai Feng got up and looked at her sadly. Bai Xiaoxue still hasn't been able to attend school yet, only learning through the handed down materials left by him. She was extremely smart though, able to understand material much harder for her age.

The teen then remembered something. "Xiaoxue, have you awakened your system yet?"

"My system?" Bai Xiaoxue thought for a bit in silence before shaking her head. "No, there's still no changes yet."

"Oh, alright." Bai Feng nodded. "Let's hurry up and eat, or it'll get cold."

Giving her one last pat on the head, he washed up two bowls with a now soggy shirt front from Bai Xiaoxue's tears.

While Bai Feng ate slowly, Bai Xiaoxue started to inhale the food into her mouth like a vacuum. He watched with an amused smile as his little sister violently attacked the stir-fried eggs and tomato.

"Yummy." Bai Xiaoxue made happy satisfied noises as her cheeks were puffed up like a squirrel.

Suddenly, her large eyes bulged slightly as she waved an arm in panic. "Ah! Water! Water!"

"Stop trying to eat so much at once!" Sweatdropping, Bai Feng put down his food and went to pour water for Bai Xiaoxue.

...

After their dinner, Bai Feng started clearing and washing the dishes while he sent Bai Xiaoxue to go wash up. Making sure that she was in bed, he stepped out of the apartment while carrying a plastic basket and a small iron shovel.

It was already pitch-black outside, with the only light being the soft beams of the moon. Bai Feng first checked on the vegetables he was growing in their small garden, rubbing the dirt between his fingers to make sure that the moistness was correct.

Finding everything to be fine, he headed off towards the large hills by hiking along the trail.

Bai Feng wasn't afraid of the darkness. Seeing that no one was nearby, his eyes began to glow with one pupil being blue and the other yellow.

[World Observer]

The former god chuckled as he thought about the fact that he was using his God Eyes to dig up the sweet potatoes in the night. His vision was now able to discern every existing matter around him, helping him quickly find what he was looking for under the dirt.

Bai Feng yawned from fatigue as he continued digging and filling up the plastic basket. He was really tired, but this was the life he had chosen to live and had no regrets.

He didn't need to kill or steal to make money. Bai Feng knew just how powerful he was, being a former god. With great power comes great responsibility, and if no one messed with him or his sister then he wouldn't use his strength.

Bai Feng stared at his system calmly. In this life, all cultivators had a system that reflected themselves and aided their cultivation. Having been a god, Bai Feng knew that his system wouldn't be like normal cultivators.

[Divine System]

Name: Bai Feng

Level: 01110101 01101110 01100100 01100101 01100110 01101001 01101110 01100101 01100100

Next milestone's reward: Skill 1's Qi consumption reduced by 50%.

Aside from the first 3 sections, everything else was all a bunch of glitched out stuff similar to his level. All Bai Feng knew is that he retains the techniques from his past life that were now "skills", but to use any of them would severely damage the world due to how much Qi they consumed.

If he was careless in using the [Divine System], the world could be easily destroyed.

On the bright side, if his system grew stronger it seemed that the Qi required to use his skills would be reduced. If only he had the money to buy cultivation resources or the time to find some demonic beasts, then levelling up would be much faster.

Currently, Bai Feng only had to kill others once in this life. His eyes narrowed as he remembered a certain bloody event.

Bai Feng didn't know why those people were after his adoptive sister, but he had to kill them all. Bai Xiaoxue herself didn't know that he was the one who rescued her, but the teen would rather not traumatize his little sister with his dark side.

He was also certain that Bai Xiaoxue was hiding things from him, but Bai Feng didn't wish to force her to talk. After all, he had his own secrets that he'd like to keep hidden.

She was very special, and the most important person to him in this life. Anyone trying to forcefully take her away will die by his hand.

Hoisting the plastic bucket filled with sweet potatoes on his shoulder, Bai Feng began the journey back home with a tuneless whistle. Tomorrow would also be a busy day with job hunting.

...

Bai Xiaoxue couldn't sleep.

She heard Bai Feng head out again from the familiar creak of their old apartment door. Sighing, she sat up and swung her legs along the side of the bed.

Her brother was the most important person in her life. Bai Xiaoxue remembers how Bai Feng saved her life that day by taking her in, and then worked so hard to take care of her.

She wished that she could grow up faster and not be such a burden on him. If only she wasn't cursed to be a monster, the young girl wished to stay with Bai Feng forever.

Looking at the melancholic moon, Bai Xiaoxue stared at her small hands and activated her system. Tears flowed down from her eyes as she knew that others were after her for the power she possessed.

The girl didn't wish to have her brother get hurt in trying to protect her. Once her power grows to a certain point, they'll be able to find her eventually.

One day, Bai Xiaoxue would have to leave Bai Feng to protect him.
