The messenger flies

" Clouds do keep me fed up, so you need to stop following me around. You make me hide afar enough, blushing my cheeks cause of your pure twilight. When will I get to see you full in person, for you're showing only your side for more than ones perpetuity".

Vernon on his way to the abandoned area, sang a phase of a ditty, children used to sing while playing Hide and go seek.

The song made him walk along the streets in merry, as if he wasn't alone. The sounds of his boots and thrashing overcoat dominated the spooky calm air, making him reach the area in less terror.

" Vernon, I'm here!", Evelyn called him over, by a slow mutter, keeping her guard to the left and right.

Evelyn didn't wait near the well, who seemed to hide behind a broken small wall, that seemed like a small fence before the houses.

Vernon walked close to her and couldn't bare to suppress his smile, as her face showed how terrified she was staying alone.

Pressing his fingers on top of the wall, vernon jumped up high, gently passed over the short wall, which was lower than his chest.

When his foot touched the ground, the dried leaves on the ground brought up disturbances, causing a crushing noise, echo the area.

" Keep it low! What if those neighboring people hear this? I just saw few people, cross this path now and then. Be careful", Evelyn sushed her friend and dragged him away from the wall.

" What's the profile? Did you see anyone at the houses", Vernon asked with raised brows.

Evelyn sighed and sat upon a small stone, mounted at the ground vertically.

" From the moment I reached this place, all I saw was quick witted cats. It wasn't one or two, they were dozens living here. May be, they could have caused people to believe on scary rumors, by their loud purrs", replied Evelyn.

Vernon seemed relieved after hearing that, as the rumors about dark arts was quite frightful to him too.

To stay away from the sight of people, they walked distance in. It was the whisper of PROFFER, brought light to the dark house through their locket and ring, while hey stepped in.

Not even a single house was in good shape. Broken windows, destructed walls with no doors.

It was only dried leaves and sands all over the floor, with sneaky spiders and webs at the corner.

Evelyn seemed frightful, whose face turned pale with her unsteady eyes luring here and there.

" THIS ISN'T NECESSARY VERNON! We could have talked during the day at our school. I don't feel good about this place", she yelled at him crazily.

Vernon just pouted and endured all her bashing, neglecting her words and behaviour.

" Did your father tell anything about Edmund?", asked Vernon.

Evelyn paused at his question and replied," Yeah! Mr. Zyke talked in private with the Headman. I was relieved to hear that he behaved well. But, few said his words were rude towards Mr. Rowan. Everyone around Grakewook are aware of this".

" I can't talk about Edmund to my dad. He warned me not to talk with him anymore. But, who cares? I somehow learned about him, from one of my gaurds. It would be helpful to him, if we tell him everything", Vernon said.

" How?" , she asked worried.

Vernon took out a tiny box from within his overcoat, a wooden box with tinted words on it.

"Its my ancestors! I think you'd have seen this at bord", saying Vernon opened the lid and let out a tiny fire fly that had long feathers on it back.

" Wow! I've never seen such a thing in my life. Even my Grandma doesn't have this", exclaimed Evelyn, who was quite amazed by the beauty of the fly

" These are called Messenger flies. Our ancesters used these to communicate with distant peoples, sending their messages through them".

" What are we going to do with them", she asked pertubed.

Vernon sighed and took a peice of parchment and pen. He wrote a message to his friend as short as he can and rolled it over into a very thin sheet.

Pulling it inside a cylindrical cascade, he hung it around the flies hip, which seemed big as a thumb.

" Now, it'll take our words to Edmund. Let's see if he could reach us back", saying, Vernon let go of the fly which flew up to a high distance as fast as it can.

It was only then Evelyn found out about Vernon's plan, for which he yelled at him minutes ago.

Vernon got the idea of messenger flies only because of Edmund, who used to send him messages during holidays, when their parents restricted them to play outside.

They used to share their trickiest plan using those flies to play prank at school.

Hoping to get back a good reply, Evelyn and Edmund waited alone at the spooky place, beating the cold wind.

When things turned awkward due to silence, Evelyn started the conversation once again. "Perhaps, did you hear about what Mr. Zyke did? He is ofcourse scary", she exclaimed.

Vernon let out a deep exhale. " Well, it's the main reason my father restricted me on talking about Wren. Mr. Zyke opposes the Ministry, he treats the Regime as if his foot. While we all support Alexandrino, he speaks ill of him. Whatever he does lies completely contrary to us. I don't understand how he convinced Mr. Rowan to reduce the duration of Nemesis. It's a mystery to me".

Evelyn nodded and looked at the sky in extreme despondent, wishing for matters to turn fortunate for her chidlhood bestfriend.
