Grandparents

For the rest of the day, Mason's phone rang nonstop as his friends, family, and all business acquaintances were all trying to reach out to him and talk to him about the social media post that was made about him. He spoke to some of them, and when the calls were becoming too much, he had to make his assistant answer them and talk to the persons on his behalf.

Mason drove down to see his grandfather after work. As Mason approached the mansion, he began to reflect on how he used to come stay with his grandparents for a few days whenever he had an argument with his father and wanted to avoid him. Mason would stay with them until his father arrived to pick him up. Mason's father was always opposed to Mason staying with his grandparents who were his late wife's parents.

Back then, all Mason ever wanted was to leave the house and go live on his own, but he couldn't do that until he was of age. He eventually moved out of his father's house to start living on his own when he turned 21, with the help of his grandfather, he was able to rent a small apartment. After his college education, he started working for his grandfather and learned the ropes of the business.

His grandfather was the CEO of Mivada, their family business until he had to retire a year ago due to health issues, forcing Mason to take over. Even though he had other plans of his.

"Your grandfather is in his study, he is expecting you," the housekeeper Miss Rosa said to Mason as he walked in.

"What of my Nana?" He asked, referring to his grandmother.

"She is in the kitchen," the housekeeper informed him. Mason chose to go greet his grandmother first. When he arrived in the kitchen, she was stirring something in a pot on the stove. Mason approached quietly behind her, and she turned around to face him before he could startle her.

"This spoon is so going to have a field day if you try whatever mischief that you are up to," his grandmother threatened, holding up the spoon she was using to cook. Mason smiled, "good to see too Nana," he said.

His grandmother placed the spoon down on the kitchen counter, wiping her hands clean with a napkin, she spread her arms open to him.

"Always good to see you, my boy. Come here." She gave Mason a bear hug. "How have you been?" She asked him, looking at his face as he pulled away from the hug.

"I'm fine Nana," he gave her a charming smile, "you look great Nana," he said.

"Flattery will get you nowhere young man," his Nana said with a smile.

"It made you smile," Mason said with a wink. She laughed, "Your grandfather is waiting for you in his study, dinner will be ready soon, so whatever you both have to discuss, I suggest you make it snappy."

Mason could tell his grandmother already knew about the social media post but she chose not to say something about it.

"All right," Mason gave her a peck on her cheek before leaving the kitchen. When Mason entered his grandfather's study, he was sitting behind his oak desk with a newspaper in his hand, and a cigar in his mouth.

"Shouldn't you be staying off those?" Mason asked, referring to the cigar he was smoking and the glass of whiskey that was in front of him. His grandfather looked up from his newspaper, he took another drag of his cigar, before putting it out.

"What are you now, my doctor?" His grandfather asked him in a grumpy voice.

Mason pulled out a chair from the desk and sat down. "Didn't your doctor advise you to stop smoking and drinking?" Mason asked him.

"It's advice, so I can choose to take it or not to," his grandfather took a gulp of his remaining drink and pushed the glass aside.

"Shouldn't you be concerned about your health?" Mason asked him.

"Young Man, I didn't call you here to come lecture me about my health. I get enough of that from your Nana," his grandfather said in an irritated tone.

Mason knew his grandfather wasn't going to listen, so he decided to drop it. "You wanted to see me?"

His grandfather took a deep breath before answering, "yes, what is going on with you?" He asked with seriousness.
