Chapter 15: Dark Storms Ahead

I stab the key into the lock of my apartment door and stumble over the threshold, a fresh bottle of brandy in my hand. The cork springs away from its hold on the bottle and I tilt my head back as the warm liquid flows down my throat. I’m such an idiot. How could I just let her slip away like that? She could be in my arms right now. Instead, I’m stumbling in the dark, trying to convince myself that I’m better off without her. My hands fumble with unlocking my phone and I stare at Allie’s smiling face on my caller ID. How was I supposed to work with her after feeling her body pressed up against mine? This was different from the innocent kiss we shared at the bar. I take another swig and try to wash away the memories as I crash onto my couch and fall into a dreamless sleep, the feeling of her tongue still lingering on mine.
