Chapter 14: Face to Face

“Tommy,” Emilia whispered. She knelt down on the floor of his loft, picking up a shard of broken glass.

“What happened here?” Dulcinea asked, clamoring up the fire escape.

Emilia had seen the broken glass from the street and had climbed up ahead of her familiar.

There was a glistening strip of crimson on the edge of the glass shard. Emilia sniffed it.

“Is that Tommy’s blood?” Dulcinea asked, her voice panicked.

“No,” Emilia said. “Amun’s.”

“H-how did that happen?” Dulcinea asked.

Emilia didn’t respond. She stood up and looked around the rest of the loft. Some of Tommy’s clothes were missing. There were some scuff marks on the floor near the window.

Most curiously, Emilia noticed that Tommy’s sunset painting was missing. Where it used to hang on the wall the paint was discolored.

“Amun took him,” Emilia said.

“Emilia, we don’t have time for this,” Dulcinea said. She ran to Emilia’s side and grabbed her arm, trying to tug her towards the shattered window.
