Chapter 37: Disappearing

One single samurai familiar – that was all King Hotaru and Queen Sada had been able to spare. Emilia was grateful they’d given them a guide at all, someone to show them the way out of the treacherous mountains.

Tommy and Emilia had left through an underground passageway at the back of the estate that led deeper into the mountains. It let out in the middle of the mountain range where there was nothing – absolutely nothing but rocks and jagged peaks.

“I’ll take you to the base of the range. It will bring you to the edge of our territory,” the samurai said.

“Thank you,” Emilia nodded. She brought her backpack to her shoulder – they couldn’t bring anything they couldn’t carry.

“Are we going to make it out of the mountains before the sun rises?” Tommy asked, brown eyes scanning the skies.

“If you do not slow us down,” the samurai barked.

Emilia glanced over her shoulder at Tommy. He had a creased brow, eyes dim.

“We should be fine,” she said.
