This is a story I wrote some time ago, but recently tried to add a little polish to it. I feel it doesn't start out the strongest, which I fear might turn people off, but hey, I figured it was worth a try.
What exactly is the story? Well, it's a fantasy story which takes place within the modern world. Unknown to humanity, mice, for rather convoluted reasons, have gained higher levels of intelligence, and began building their own proper society, one of magic and exploration and battles against terrifying foes, rather than modern technology. This is mostly due to the fact that modern technology is really hard to make, of course, and beggars can't be choosers.
More specifically, it is the story of Jerin, a young mouse on a quest to avenge her people, and ideally sate her boredom in the process. It's sort of a fantasy parody, but not quite, having a regularly absurdist tone, but not really making fun of the subject matter.
Oh, and before anyone who finishes the first chapter asks, no, I did not deliberately copy The Tale of Desperaux. When I first wrote this years ago, it seemed like a cool premise, even if the idea of a mouse fighting with a sewing needle sounded strangely familiar. By the time I remembered that was a thing, I couldn't really come up with a reasonable way to change it, and figured nobody would ever read it anyways... and now, here we are. Aside from that iconic core image, the stories really aren't that similar at all, anyways. It it's a rip off of anything, it's Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.
