Chapter 8: A Twisted Competition

Celia stared at Carter in disbelief.

“You have a strange sense of humor,” she said, shaking her head at his suggestion of them getting married so soon. They were practically strangers to one another.

“Why would it be a joke?” Carter asked, a slight upward turn to his lips. “Has nobody ever acted spontaneously towards you before?”

“Not with a marriage proposal,” Celia replied, moving away from him.

This was frightening. Did he not understand that?

“Well, there’s a first time for everything,” Carter responded.

As he did, though, his expression turned serious, and his steely eyes found hers. His presence was so overpowering that Celia almost leaned towards him.

Using all of her willpower, she looked away purposefully and walked towards the fridge instead.

“I will never be that spontaneous or crazy,” she remarked as she removed the dessert from the fridge.

“Why don’t you rather try and understand the concept of spontaneity?” Carter asked with a disarming smile.
