When Celia returned with the kids to her new home, she was surprised to see Carter going into the house next door.
What on earth was he doing there? Celia was immediately curious.
“There’s Carter!” Lennie shouted. “Where is he going?”
“Shush!” Celia whispered into Lennie’s ear. “Leave him alone. He’s visiting someone.”
“Who is he visiting?” Lillian asked anxiously.
Celia knelt down to speak to them on their level. “I don’t think we’re the only people he knows around here,” she said quietly. “Carter works at my company, and our neighbors probably do, too.”
“Can we go see those people?” Lillian asked.
“Only if we know who they are beforehand,” Celia replied.
“How will you know who they are if you don’t go and ask them?” Lennie asked with a puzzled look on his face.
“I will make a phone call, don’t worry,” Celia responded. She ruffled both the children’s hair to stop them from fretting. “Now, let’s get the two of you into the bath,” she suggested.
