Chapter 30:The Angel's Confession

"I'll tell you a story, AJ. You don't have to watch, remember? Simone will be just fine."

His voice floats to me from behind his surgical mask, but I'm not listening. Simone's nose is still covered with an oxygen mask. I could have listened more carefully during prenatal, but I know what's happening. Jason is suctioning amniotic fluids. I can see the baby's legs now, and if Jason wasn't here, I'd be vomiting my visceral organs out on this floor.

"It's the story of how my mom met my dad. Are you listening?"

My "Yes" is torn from me.

"Okay. My father was a bad man before he died. He did all sorts of evil things and got away with it all the time, because he controlled pretty much all of London. I saw it happen. But my mom, she told me he was worse before I was born.
