I kicked her in the kneecap. Her leg buckled under her, allowing me to tackle her around the waist, and pin her to the ground. Before Isabella could take me out at close range, I slammed my fist with the reinforced ribbon into her temple.

She went slack.

I checked her pulse and breathing. Both were slow but steady. She'd recover. I sat back on my calves, breathing hard, one hand pressed to my side.

Isabella was a witch and shouldn't have sensed any demon in me. The only one who ever had was Nava when she'd been amped up on crazy levels of magic. Normal witches didn't have any kind of demon sense. Either Nava had missed a very powerful dark witch when she'd purged dark magic from the world last month, or there was a demon behind this compulsion and its magic was what had allowed Isabella to recognize my goblinness.

My gut favored the second explanation.
