Chapter 17

Theodore opens the gate to the orphanage play yard. I walk down the path, looking in both directions at the kids playing. I started to get discouraged at the site of nothing, but humans. Theodore must have noticed my disbelief, because he grabbed my arm, wrapping his into my elbow, and led me forward. I shook off my disbelief. This was not the time to give up. I needed workers, and these children needed a home. Theodore opens the doors to enter the building. As we walked in, kids of all ages ran up to us.

"Are you here to adopt us?"

"Take me! Take me!"

"I can work!"

"I'll be a great child if you take me!" They were all shouting things at once. My heart sank at the site of the kids begging. I would adopt all of them if I could... but I knew I could only care for three maximum. I also knew these humans had a chance at a normal life, whereas the demon children who would always be outcast for their differences. A woman walked out of a room, and shushed the kids.
