Chapter 2

The world was created by a god named Ael.

First, 9 seas and 5 continents were made.

Then, Ael blessed the world with life.

He gifted mankind ‘mana’. The high-purity energy, a lesser form of what Ael himself uses.

Mana was the source of life and strength. Some creatures completely depended on mana to survive. Mana was equivalent to power.

I was rereading one of my favorite books titled “The first Mage”.

Legend has it there existed 4 supreme species. The Gods, Giants, Demons and Dragons.

There was no stronger or weaker between them.

The Gods specialized in altering the world, changing laws. They were makers of worlds. However the Gods were also the most diverse of the 4, each God having their own specialty.

Giants were the archenemies of Gods. They were a feared race, the ultimate warriors. They were also great architects, as well as creatures of mass destruction. They often invaded the Gods' territories and flattened everything to ground.

Demons were also enemies of the Gods, they did as they pleased. The Demons often plundered territories of Gods for fun, but it wasn’t as destructive or irreparable as the damage brought by Giants. They were well known for their superior magic.

Dragons were acknowledged as one of the wisest races. They also had the toughest bodies. They were a seclusive species, only taking action if someone was stupid enough to intrude in their territory. The Demons and Dragons often fought each other, they were each other's antithesis. But they also desired the other’s qualities. The Demons lusted after the Dragons superior body and knowledge, while the Dragons wanted the Demon’s affinity with magic.

The Giants were eradicated during the Primordial Era by a group effort by the Gods, Demons and Dragons.

During the early stages of the Antiquity Era, demonkin invaded the world.

Ael could not send help to his creations. The death of the Giants resulted in the end of the Primordial Era, and with it, the world borders solidified. No higher dimensional being could cross over as easily as before. As for the Demons, they had plenty of non transcendents who could roam the worlds freely.

Despite humans having an overwhelming advantage in numbers as well as quantity of mana, they were pushed back by the demon forces.

Many races went extinct during this Great War.

Fairies, dwarves, elves, centaurs, orges, pixies, trolls, kobolds, orcs, yetis, phoenix’ and so on.

Humanity was cornered, despair overtook everyone.

That was when he appeared.

Falhorn. A man with no family name.

I sighed. They exaggerated this part for the common folk. Back in the Antiquity Era no one had a family name.

Humans had been using mana wrong. Simply using large amounts of mana to blast our opponents. No one thought it was strange, until the demons showed their own magic.

At first we thought it wasn’t mana. It was too different from what we used.

But the more humanity resisted, the more they were astounded. Mana had attributes, elemental ones, and could manifest themselves in those elements.

But no one had any knowledge on how to use magic.

So when Falhorn appeared, showing the way and teaching others the method of inscribing data into mana, creating your own mana cycle, and casting ‘spells’, he was named the First Mage.

I always smile at this part. The significance of the title First Mage is astounding. If ‘Saint’ is the ruler of a continent, the First Mage is the ruler of the world.

Mages are nurtured, even if they have a mana cycle and the intellect to use runes, if they don’t have the knowledge, they will never be able to use spells. The First Mage was also called the father of all mages. They used his heritage as a basis for research and furthered their knowledge, passing it down to future generations.

After him, there was no other like him. No one could use magic on their own, or create magic without extensive knowledge.

This part was about the ‘birth’ of the First Mage.

After his appearance humanity could assemble a counter force that could withstand the demons and finally fought back.

Not many records are found about the Great War, however in the 89th year, 12th cycle of the Eolic Calendar, this exact military report was found and restored.

Following which was the entire life story of the First Mage. There were no abnormalities, until the last section.

…later, it would be known as his last public appearance.

End of the 52nd year of the Numbra Calendar, the First Mage and his entire family vanished.

According to records, there was a brilliant light show for 3 months covering the entire world. The rulers of nations sought advice from the First Mage, who had said not to worry about it.

When the light finally faded away the rulers visited the First Mage once more, only to find nothing.

I was also among the many who speculated why and where the First Mage went.

Over the years I learned basic combat and I’m going to be 16 next week.

A few years ago the prophet finally found another piece of information. The Saint will awaken his abilities at the day he or she becomes 16.

Arjun was already 17 so it was confirmed he wasn’t the Saint.

Hermia, my older sister, was later confirmed not to be the Saint.

I was 13 then.

Because of the prophecy, the security around Arjun and Hermia lessened considerably, while Mirst, Lea and I always had guards surrounding us.

But at the same time assassination attempts increased exponentially.

I myself was conflicted, do I want to be the Saint? When I was young I definitely wanted to, but I spent 3 years under the constant attacks of assassins, soon 4 years. If I am not the Saint, I won’t have to be wary of every corner, every window, every person I pass by. I would finally be able to relax.

I was increasingly nervous, unsure, and a week passed in a flash.
