Once I made sure the Arch Taratect was dead, I check the surroundings to make sure there was nothing around to then breathe a sigh of relief.

Phew, we survived.

We survived!

Wow, that was tough.

I thought having to be chased by Oka-sama and having to fight her was bad enough, but having Shiro-chan ambushed so soon after she escaped?

Well, that was harsh.

Oka-sama certainly wanted us dead.

And Shiro-chan almost died because of that.

Why are you so eager to kill us, Oka-sama?

I mean, I understand her being bloodthirsty, considering that's how spiders are in nature in the real world, but still.

If this were a game, I'd be giving it a lot of flak for being too difficult.

It's like the final boss appears just as you enter the first area, and when you escape, you're attacked by a bunch of her Minions at once.

Unbelievable.

The only reason we managed to survive is because of the Skills we have.

If we didn't have them, Oka-sama would have killed us without the possibility of us escaping of her.

Thanks to Chastity I wouldn't have even managed to get close enough to Oka-sama to hit her with a Rot Attack.

And if it wasn't for Perseverance and Charity, Shiro-chan wouldn't have survived.

I can feel the absolute exhaustion welling up from Shiro-chan, which fills me with anger.

Of the two of us, I am the stronger.

It's not a matter of pride because I say so but it's the reality.

And yet, Shiro-chan almost died, because I couldn't protect her, I couldn't protect her.

We've been on countless occasions where we've come close to the brink of death, like that time with the bees or when Shiro-chan fought Araba-chan but on those occasions I either didn't know about Shiro-chan's existence yet or I could go help her if things got too complicated.

But this time, the situation was too much for me to help her.

And all because I am too weak.

But no more.

I promise to get stronger, for Shiro-chan's sake.

For the time being, the crisis is over.

Thanks to our current location, which is a magma lake in the middle of the Middle Layer, the other spiders won't chase us here, or at least I hope not.

If we rely on Oka-sama's poor resistance against fire, despite her being the most powerful spider I know, then the other spiders won't be able to do much.

The biggest problem is that strange new puppeteer spider.

I didn't see much of her, but I was able to use Appraisal on her.

It's called Puppet Taratect, a small spider monster that is inside the puppet it controls.

Its physical stats are as strong or even greater than the arch Taratect but it doesn't excel at magic.

That thing is a freak.

Since it is nowhere on the evolution map provided by Wisdom-sama, it must be a special evolution that is not part of the normal Taratect line.

Maybe it's a mutation or something? Either way, that's an ace I wish it had kept up the sleeve.

It may not be as terrible as Oka-sama, but the stats hover around 10,000, so it would definitely be a very difficult battle, one that I could lose out from.

Maybe if the two of us worked together against that thing, we would win, but it would still be very dangerous and one of us might die.

It was strong enough to keep Shiro-chan from escaping the fight and that thing was really eager to fight me as soon as I got to help Shiro-chan, so it would have been a big problem.

If they had switched places, being the Arch Taratects blocking Shiro-chan's path while the Puppet Taratect was fighting her....

Yeah, I wouldn't have made it in time if that were the case.

That was one of mother's few miscalculations, besides underestimating us.

And those mistakes were what allowed us to escape.

The worst situation we've faced so far.

What should we do now?

Well, first of all, I would like to know what Oka-sama is doing.

I tried to connect with the parallel minds I sent to give her a spiritual battle against Oka-sama, but it seems there was some blockage halfway.

Our connection has not been severed, but something is interfering with our communication.

My connection with Oka-sama is also fading.

I guess Oka-sama was able to track our actions perfectly well thanks to the fact that she was using her Skill, Kin Control, to spy on me, or us.

It was when we first noticed the influence of this Skill that we decided to use it to launch a counterattack against Oka-sama. It makes sense that she's still connecting us.

We had lowered our guard against her because she could no longer control us, but she must have used that connection to be able to see us.

And if that connection is weakening now, does that mean Oka-sama won't be able to see us anymore?

If that's the case, then she might try to attack us again if the connection recovers.

She will know where we are.

But for now, without the connection that means she probably can't tell where we are now. Maybe we can relax a bit.

However, that's just a guess and that doesn't mean she's going to let her guard down again.

Letting our guard down got us into this situation.

As it is, maybe I should stop using Clairvoyance to look to Oka-sama.

I'm afraid that would attract her attention.

For now, if we just stay here, we should be able to gain at least a few days.

If the parallel minds can defeat Oka-sama in that time, then it will all be over.

Even if not, I hope they weaken her enough so that we can kill her.

And even if they don't, and we have no chance of defeating her in person. Then running away would be the other option.

Now I understand how adventurers feel trying to kill the demon king who had already dominated the world in a manga I read.

I'm afraid of the arachnid demon king and her arachnid minions.

Well, let's focus on what I can do for now.

Thanks to the Arch Shiro-chan killed, we went up to level 35.

And now, the words Evolution Available have appeared in my status.

Hehehe. It's time. I can evolve again!

This is the last step I need, or rather we need, to reach my evolutionary goal, Arachne.

I have only one option available: Zana Horowa.

From what I can deduct from the evolutionary tree, this species is at the same level as Oka-sama, at least in terms of potential.

Still, considering my evolutions so far, that doesn't mean that my stats will suddenly go up a lot or anything.

Evolving won't make me as strong as Oka-sama.

For one thing, even if, let's say we have the same stats, there's still a big level difference.

Oka-sama is level 89, I would have to evolve and advance to level 89 to compete against that.

Anyway, if I evolve, my stats will go up at least a little bit, and maybe I'll get new Skill, too.

Although at this point, the only good skills I got by evolving are things like Rot Attack and Annihilating Evil Eye which are very strong, but if I didn't have Rot Nullification, they would hurt me a lot!

I'll also be totally unprotected when it evolves, just like Shiro-chan, but all the monsters fled the area somewhere while I was sinking the Arch into the lava, so no problem.

Not too long ago, it was a mortal risk to evolve here, but now the monsters run away from me of their own free will.

That sucks quite a bit, as it makes it very difficult to get food and sweet experience points, but at times like this, I'm thankful for it.

Okay, now, let's evolve!

I broke away from the hug I was giving Shiro-chan so that we can both evolve.

The individual Ede Saine will evolve into Zana Horowa.

Yes.

Eh, my consciousness... it's not fading away like it normally would.

What's up with that?

Hmm, could it be because of Exhaustion Nullification?

That Skill I obtained with my title of Ruler of Sloth.

I obtained the title shortly after Shiro-chan did, so we can both have it, and it gave me the awesome skill of Sloth and Exhaustion Nullification, which was integrated into the skill that I already had, Status Condition Resistance.

The skill Exhaustion Nullification not only does it cancel Sleep attribute attacks; it also prevents the negative effects of not sleeping.

I can stay awake twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, with no penalties for it.

Every otaku's wet dream.

Plus, I can still sleep normally when I want to. It's a pretty useful Skill.

I guess that's also why I don't faint when I evolve now.

So... this is evolving, huh.

It feels pretty weird.

It doesn't hurt or itch or anything, but it's like my body is being remodeled from the inside out.

Like I'm becoming something completely different.

But strangely, it doesn't feel bad or scary.

Evolution complete.

Species changed to Zana Horowa

All basic attributes have increased.

Evolutionary skill bonus acquired.

Then a bunch of my Skill levels up.

I knew that evolving would improve my Skills and stuff but hearing them listed like this really emphasizes how many there are.

Skill [Immortality] gained as a result of evolution.

Skill points acquired.

Excuse meeeeeeeeee?!

Did I just hear what I think I just heard?

Wait.

What did you say I have, System-chan?

Immortality: The user can no longer die unless his soul is completely destroyed.

If I can't die, doesn't that mean I can attack even Oka-sama if I want to?

I can be trampled, hit with a breath attack, or be torn to pieces by magic, and I still won't die as long as my soul is fine.

I'll keep attacking like a zombie.

Even an all-powerful monster like Oka-sama would run out of strength sooner or later if he fought an enemy that doesn't die.

Anyway, I'd better eat to regain the red stamina I lost when I evolved.

Hmm.

Yeah, my stats didn't really go up that drastically either.

As with my previous evolutions, it's not much more than a normal level up.

My magic stats are already over 20,000, so they're somewhat on par with Oka-sama, with my resistance and speed following close behind.

Besides Immortality, the most notable new Skill is probably Status Condition Nullification, the evolved form of the Skill I had, Status Condition Resistance.

Also, I was too distracted with Immortality to listen to it, but it seems I got a new title called Champion when I evolved.

I got the Status Condition Resistance Skill with it, but then I guess it merged with the one I already had plus the possible interference thanks to Twin Link made it immediately evolve to the nullification level.

Hmm, let's see Shiro-chan status to see what she got.

Some of her stats are very close to mines but I'm still stronger.
