The River - Chapter 11

The first night passed without any kind of problem from wild monsters or natural causes. Marcus stayed awake most of the time. They took turns sleeping with Relia. After the night passed, They started to believe that Alan harbored no ill intent towards them for the time being.

Of course, this behavior of Alan's does not change everything. In just one night, they were not going to trust him. Still, seeing that there was no problem at night, They were more at ease when around Marcus.

-

Alan took a deep breath and looked around for some time. There was no living creature close to their camp site.

He looked at Marcus and then started to talk.

"I am going to prepare for breakfast, and then we need to pick up some water." "One of us has to stay here."

Alan said the last words pretty calmly, without pointing out any kind of problems. He wanted to not be suspected.

Marcus tried to take something from Alan's words, but then he looked at Relia. The meaning of his look was simple.

"I am not seeing any suspicious behavior." Relia nodded and then answered.

"I will be going with you then." The words of Relia were not true. She was just testing the waters.

Alan smiles and then speaks.

"I believe it would be better if I went with Marcus; the outside is more dangerous than here." "Having a combat-type individual would do better for safety."

Marcus laughed and nodded. Picking up his spear, he exclaimed.

"Yes, he is right."

Alan's words made Marcus and Relia feel better. If Alan acknowledged the words of Relia and decided to go with her, Marcus would be following them behind. It is easy to see that killing or doing something bad to Relia is easier.

It would be a little bit suspicious in the eyes of Marcus and Relia. The fact that he did not accept it and said himself that it was better to go with Marcus is a reassuring thing for them.

-

Marcus and Alan ate enough of the leftover meat to fill their bellies, then started to go to the nearest river to haul some water to the camp site. As long as they are careful, surviving more than two days should not be too hard.

Of course, Marcus does not know that he is walking side by side with Alan.

Marcus does not stop looking at Alan for even one second. even when walking side by side with him. Marcus believes that he needs to be alert. Alan has a sword. One second of not being alert is enough for him to cut down his head and deal a grave injury.

Then taking Relia back to the camp would be easy work for Alan.

After walking for some time, they reached the river. Alan starts to speak. "It is common knowledge that all kinds of wild animals or even monsters come to rivers to hunt or drink water."

"So, we need to be extra careful."

Marcus nodded. He had heard something like this before, and hearing it from Alan made him think that Alan had some sort of experience living in the wild before the events of Pandora happened.
