An Empire Falls (2)

We drove in silence, Jessica occasionally glanced over at me. Her eyes betrayed her fears.

"Do you want to talk about what you saw Jessica?" I asked quietly.

She looked at me for a few minutes unsure of what she should say.

"It's ok, you aren't a target anymore remember?" I said reassuring her.

"How... How did parts of them get on the ceiling?" She asked quietly.

I almost laughed until I saw how serious she was. I controlled myself.

"Honestly I couldn't answer that, I just gave them what they wanted to do to me," I said thinking about it.

She simply nodded as she drove. Her hands white-knuckled on the steering wheel. We drove back to the house without another word. I got out of the car and was met by Zara, who had her hands on her hips.

"It's getting to where every time you go out someone dies, you know that?" She said with a chuckle.

I looked at her with a what the hell face. She only laughed as she grabbed one of the heavy black trash bags.
