Chapter 26

“Mom, you never know. Maybe he’s just another gifted being and he somehow found us. Maybe he’s just alone and needs help from us. He might not be connected…” I try to defend him but Mom cuts me off, shaking her head. I can see in her eyes that she feels bad for me but her fear for our safety is stronger than any other emotion.

“No, Charlie, if he was this innocent magical being who needed our help, he would not know about Grandmother’s compound,” She busies herself cleaning the kitchen and I wipe down the dining table while we talk. Mom's voice shakes and she almost stutters when she mentions Grandmother's compound. It must bring back a lot of unpleasant memories, more than just unpleasant.

“Maybe he escaped from there and was able to find us to get our help?” I offer another scenario. I don’t know why I am fighting so hard for him to be a good guy. Maybe I just don’t want this feeling of betrayal to fully hit me.
