Volleyball practice is uneventful and I am, for the most part, able to focus on the tasks in front of me.
“Okay, Charlie, this is game point,” Coach says from the sideline. It’s only a scrimmage but we try to take everything seriously. It’s my turn to serve. I take a few steps back from the line then toss the ball up into the air and make my approach, jumping and hitting the ball cleanly over the net. Tiffany takes the ball hard into her arms but it pops right back up, near the outside. The outside hitters step out of the way and the setter is able to get to the ball and set the ball beautifully back behind her. The hitter makes her approach and me and the other two girls in the back row, all brace for the impact. Our blockers line up and make the jump just in time, sending the ball straight back down onto the other side. Tiffany tries to dive for it but misses by a few inches. My team cheers and the game ends. We walk across the net, high-fiving the other team.
