Chapter 49

“Charlie!” I wake up out of a dead sleep, sweating and panting. Mom’s voice echoes in my head. It’s almost as if she is in the room with me.

“Mom?” I say into the darkness of my room but nothing and no one responds. It sounded so real though. I look around the empty room and then fall back into the pillows. I sigh and try to close my eyes to sleep a little bit longer.

I’ve drifted off to sleep a few minutes later but the loud lock on the door startles me awake. I stay silent and still in bed, trying to use my peripherals to see who came into the room.

“Max?” I sit up when I see his familiar figure in my room. “What happened? What are you doing here?” I get out of bed and meet him halfway from the door. He looks frantic and worried.

“We have to go now,” He says then bypasses me and starts throwing some of the clothes from the closet into a bag he brought. Then he grabs some of the prewrapped food from the tray that I hadn’t gotten to yet.
