Chapter 11: Potent Drug

"Cheng, Cheng'er?" Madam Liu turned around, looking at the person standing in front of her, a bit dazed, "What's going on? I heard from the maid that she went to call Doctor Lu again, and I thought you..."

Shen Juncheng said, "It wasn't me, Aunt. It was Madam, she suddenly fainted for unknown reasons. I was anxious and quickly sent a maid to fetch the doctor to take a look."

"An'an?" Madam Liu was surprised, how come she fainted, "Why did she faint?"

Shen Juncheng feigned embarrassment, "Ahem, ahem, nephew does not know. The doctor is examining An'an right now."

Madam Liu glanced at the bed, where Su An'an indeed lay, and Doctor Lu had been called and was performing acupuncture on her.

With a slight frown, she looked at Qing He, as if to ask, how did you handle this? How did she end up lying down?

Qing He looked bewildered; she had clearly given proper instructions, but Su An'an didn't listen. She didn't administer the medicine, so why would she faint?

Besides, wasn't the medicine not supposed to cause fainting?

Not understanding, she decided to watch the situation unfold. Madam Liu immediately composed her expression, "As long as you're okay, hearing the commotion here, I thought something had happened to you, it gave Aunt quite a scare."

Shen Juncheng once again played the part: "Sorry for worrying Aunt, Juncheng is unfilial."

Madam Liu glanced at him, expressionless, but unable to predict the variables, she commanded someone to find a seat for the young master and kept her eyes on Doctor Lu.

Moments later, Doctor Lu withdrew the silver needle, and Su An'an suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood, which was purple, clearly indicating poisoning.

Just then, the guests arrived; West Garden was remote, and despite having walked, their pace wasn't as quick as Madam Liu's.

Upon entry, they saw the bride coughing up blood, everyone was startled, clamoring to ask what was going on, causing Madam Liu a headache. She raised a hand and said, "Quiet, let's hear what Doctor Lu has to say."

Doctor Lu put away the silver needle and quickly rose to prescribe medicine, instructing a servant to procure it urgently overnight, indicating the situation seemed quite dire.

The group grew more curious, surrounding the room until it was almost impassable.

Doctor Lu closed the medical kit and said, "Everyone, don't panic. The young madam is now out of danger, a few days of quiet rest will suffice," pausing here to add, "Fortunately, I arrived in time, otherwise, Madam might have succumbed to the poison."

At the mention of poisoning, Madam Liu's eyes darkened, "Poisoning? Doctor Lu, what do you mean by that?"

Doctor Lu replied, "Could I ask the young master to retrieve the leftovers of Madam's last meal or the tableware?"

Shen Juncheng immediately ordered someone to fetch them.

Briefly, Chao Sheng returned, saying the leftovers had been thrown out, the plates washed clean, only a jug of wedding wine remained, which a young servant had kept for himself, intending to drink, but hadn't had the chance yet.

Now they had found it.

The little maid respectfully handed over the jug, Doctor Lu hurried forward to inspect it, merely needed to open the lid and sniff to change his expression, "Madam Hou, young master, we found it, this is the source of the poison."

"A large dose of Joyful Powder was added to this wine. If consumed by someone strong, a cup would enhance the occasion, but if someone frail drank even a cup, they couldn't withstand the medication, leading to poisoning."

"The young madam's body is weak, how could she endure such potent medicine, hence the immediate fainting."

At the mention of Joyful Powder, some guests familiar with frequenting pleasure houses couldn't help but sigh, it's a drug used by brothels to train prostitutes, its effect is imaginable.
