Now and Then – Part Three (Now Again)

The elite society operated under a different set of rules.

Just as it was extravagant at times of celebration, it handled its tragedies differently... It hushed, if not silenced them completely. Official stories that covered tragedies were one thing, and the real stories that loomed like a shadow behind those were something else entirely. There was no smoke without fire, but there was no one better at hiding fire than those who had ultimate access to power and money.

Stuff got leaked, of course...

Sometimes servants talked, sometimes friends or relatives, sometimes the press dug deeper… but all that meant nothing except for rumors that were unfounded and that were hidden under the carpet of that same cover eventually.

The official story.

And so, what happened that day at the Evans mansion was never to be learned, it was only to be forgotten by those who witnessed it, and to be forever remembered by those who swore to avenge it.
