Chapter 16: Just One Drink

“Why don’t I just give you a kidney, because that would be much more fun,” Ash snorted.

“I know it puts you in a weird spot,” I said. I sighed and looked down into my untouched whiskey.

“A weird spot? It is a h*ll of a tall order,” he argued. He shook his head and finished his drink, tapping the bar for another.

“You know I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important,” I muttered.

“But you can’t tell me what this is about?” he asked.

I glanced up at him. Ash had his whiskey glass halfway to his lips, a blond eyebrow arched. I couldn’t help smiling at that look. Here we were again, me asking him to do something that would be more trouble for him than for me.

“I’m working a case. That’s all I can say. Investigator – client privilege and all,” I said with a shrug. “What can I say to convince you?” I asked, smiling sweetly.
