Chapter 23: This is How to Get Things Done

“Loki! You can’t declare war on Nightshade,” I warned sharply.

Loki arched an eyebrow at me and sniffed. “I’m not leaving Persephone there to become a casualty to Caleb’s twisted desires.”

“You won’t have to,” I assured.

Loki snarled and tossed his head back. The cords of muscle in his neck were tight and bulging. I could hear his knuckles cracking every time he clenched his hands.

“Why… why would she agree to leave me and join Nightshade?” he asked.

I wasn’t sure if Loki wanted me to answer, so I didn’t. I sat on the edge of the wrinkly bed and plucked at the comforter.

“It doesn’t matter. I’m not letting Caleb get away with this. Not after everything…” Loki sighed. He bowed his head and I saw a ripple run through him.

Standing, I went to him and put my hands on his shoulders. He raised his head to look at me, our eyes meeting. I held his gaze, keeping my expression serious.
