Chapter 36: Reluctant Rescue

My scream was muffled against a hot, large hand that curled around my face. I kicked and thrashed against the covers, screaming again and again even though the sound kept getting cut off.

My heart raced, the blood pounded in my ears, and I tried to bite the hand. My teeth dug into skin and there was a pained groan, but the hand still clamped down.

All I could think was that Caleb had come back to finish what he’d started. Suddenly, my blankets were as heavy as a body pinning me down and I started to hyperventilate, my vision blurring as panic set in.

I continued to kick and flail, even as a strong arm came down on my torso, trying to hold me steady. I think I heard someone talking to me, but I couldn’t hear their words or voice. Everything was muffled by the blood rushing in my ears.

My leg struck out and hit my attacker. With a grunt, they pulled away.

“Sh*t,” a familiar voice muttered.
