Chapter 28: The Baroness

Riley’s POV

“You'll love this wine,” Cameron continues. “It has a delicate body that blends wonderfully well with its fruity flavor.”

He takes a sip and I do the same. To me the wine tastes just like the others I've tasted before.

“Delicious, isn't it?” he comments happily.

“Of course,” I answer, gently setting the glass aside.

Cameron keeps pacing back and forth in the kitchen. He's playing chef. He has taken the food out of the oven at just the right time, pretending he had just finished cooking, but for all I know, the delivery man had left five minutes before I arrived.

Now we're eating and he's talking about wine. He couldn't have chosen a topic that interests me less, but it's something I choose to omit in pursuit of fulfilling my role.

“So, what do you think?” asks Cameron.

I try to remember what he was telling me, but I wasn't really paying attention, so I take a quick bite and smile with mock delight.

“Oh, it's delicious,” I murmur.
