Chapter 33: Never again

Theo’s POV

Riley is in front of me, sitting across the table where she once told me it had all started. The silence in the room is palpable over the dirty bookshelves and over the liquor stains that swarm the worn-out carpet.

Part of me wonders what memories all of this brings back to her. What parts of her memory recall this home? What it was like the day she left? And what other parts from the perspective of the child who was happy, at some time in her past, within these walls.

To me, both are blurred images of the person I know now. To say that Riley hasn't changed in the time we've been together would be a lie, because in fact, she has. The fearful, anger-filled girl I once knew trying to steal from me has given way to a woman who is slowly beginning to open up, like a flower in the middle of spring.
