“Peshra took us into hiding and we have been able to live and thrive underground. We only surface to mate and produce the next generation of children. Do you understand?”
Once again Amullette nodded but had no other response.
“Mikaya’s mother became lost to us many years ago and only returned to us when she was pregnant with Mikaya. They came to the surface again several months ago because Mikaya wanted to meet her father,” Avia explained.
“My powers don’t work here.” She remembered Mikaya saying. “I only just met my daddy once. But, I had his image all my life. He was better than I hoped for.” Amullette felt the tears in her eyes.
“She told me her powers don’t work here,” Amullette whispered. “I didn’t know what that meant.”
Avia smiled and took Amullette’s hand. “Yes, our powers don’t work on Earth because it is not one of Peshra’s planets and the toxins in the air block Peshra’s magic.”
