My heart thudded as I began to pack but before we could get anything together, the whistle of jet engines flew overhead. My heart sank as we all abandoned our things and ran for the door. Mack took Kalon by the hand and we all made a mad dash for his transporter. Bombs rocked the ground before we could make it. A tear pricked my eye as I thought of all the lives that would be needlessly lost.
“Hellena!” Kalon shouted and turned to run back. Mack held him fast and scooped his fighting body into his arms.
“Let me go, Mack. I have to find her.”
I helped Mack get him into the transporter and locked the doors.
“There is nothing we can do,” I tried to tell him.
“You didn’t even try, you just ran!” he screamed in my face. “We are always running!” I watched as tears welled up and fell from his eyes.
