Chapter 90: A Little Rebellion

The next several months went by as routine as usual, until I decided it was time for Kalon to have more concrete reading and math materials. I was teaching both Kalon and Hellena one evening when a knock came at the door. Several young people and their mothers stood facing me.

“We would like you to teach our kids how to read,” one mother with a preteen girl said. “We will pay you well for your time. We do not want this to be the end of the line for our kids. Beth told us months ago that you were teaching her youngest girl, but we didn’t think anything of it until little Hellena read a poem to us all.”

“I don’t know what to say.” I looked at all of them. More than twelve kids stood there but I did not have the skill to teach them all at once. “I can teach the oldest three and they can share what they learn with the rest.” I agreed.

The eldest three turned out to be two boys, Tom and Sam, and one girl, Julie.
