Subconsciously, I then found myself pull out one of my business cards from my jacket pocket, and quickly scribbling a message before also shoving that in. "Cap it." B said putting the uncovered coffee on the counter. I grabbed a plastic cap and popped it on. "Your coffee sir." He weakly smiled at me without even looking up, grabbed the bag and coffee before walking out the door, now fixated on his smartphone.
I turned around and jumped into the air letting out a quick scream when finding B staring at me, almost nose to nose. "B!" I squealed throwing her a dirty look.
"You slipped him your number." She said sing song with a cheeky wink. "Mm, Mm you want to be spontaneous or get in the bed with him"
Shaking my head and contemplating how I even knew her, I grabbed a muffin and shoved it into a bag. "Business card. He's a businessman." I looked up to find her squinting at me, a smile playing on her lips. "Really?" I rolled my eyes as I picked up my coffee and swung my bag over my shoulder. "Yup, I could tell by the way he read the paper." She was still giving me a look that said I-Don't-Believe-You or I-Know-You-Too-Well. I shrugged it off as I rifled through my bag for my phone.
"You sure it wasn't love? Sparks or anything when you looked into his eyes or that delicious face of his? You know, if he were a muffin I would of gobbled him up by now." I rolled my eyes and walked around the other side of the counter. "He didn't even look at me. He is a businessman. And we both know I don't fall in love." I opened the shop door and the bell went, the noise of traffic suddenly surrounding us. "Bye." I called as I stepped outside.
It was a fair walk to my lawyers office. Well in fact, it's not that far but when you add the thick crowds and their hustle and bustle as well as the fact I was in heels and my hair kept blowing in my face, the wind making my cheeks numb. It took some time.
When I arrived I couldn't help but shudder. The dark wooden paneling and shiny floor. It's almost exactly what my office was like but it was a lawyer's office. I had always had a thing about lawyers and I still hated them. I never really know why but I was extremely disappointed when my sister joined the crowd. She loves it whilst I try to keep my distance in case she'd try to set me up with one. Shame I needed them so often with my business dealings and this time, they way I saw it, I had no option but to march into Mr. Pearson's office and not let it get to me.
"Katherine. How lovely to see you." I turned around on my heel to find Mr. Pearson behind me. He had salt and pepper hair, wore a charcoal, pinstripe suit and smiled at me kindly making his eye crinkle. "Mr. Pearson." I said nodding at him professionally and returning the smile. I then followed him down a short wide corridor into his large office.
It had a dark carpet, rich wallpaper where there wasn't bookcases and his desk was a dark oak. The place screamed 'Rich, powerful and important'. "Take a seat." He said gesturing to the seats in front of the desk. I nodded before carefully preaching just on the edge of one.
An hour later and we were done. He printed off multiple copies of the contract, handed me three, and sent me on my way. I gratefully slipped the manila envelope into my bag, and practically ran out of the office. Jumping into my car, I called the office to check if anyone had called.
"Okay," I said slightly disappointed . "Well if anyone calls and says they were given a business card, make an appointment for them to see me sometime before Friday hopefully." I paused for a moment thinking if I had anything else to say to my loyal assistant Ellise. "Actually, if he calls, put him though to me." I finished, confident that would be best option. "Okay, anything else?" Ellise waited patiently whilst I did a mental checklist.
"Don't think so." I said finally. "I'll be there very soon." I finished. "Would you like a coffee?"I smiled. "No thank-you but feel free to get yourself one." With a good bye, I hung up. I then spent the rest of the journey checking emails and working my way through next months accounts.
"We are here." The driver said causing me to look up. He was smiling at me in the rear view mirror. "Do you need help with anything?" He questioned. I shook my head and returned the smile. "No thank you." Opening the car door, I pulled my Burberry Trench coat tighter around my waist, hanging my bag off my left arm. I pushed the car door closed carefully, before marching across the wide foot path and through the revolving doors.
The shiny marble lobby was fairly empty but a look at my watch told me it was 10 so the crowds would be settled at their desks by now. Stepping into the elevator, I hit the 39th floor, before swiping on another coat of red lipstick. Happy with everything, I smiled at my reflection just as the elevator came to a stop at level 18. A young lady with blonde hair smiled at me before coming in and hitting the 24th floor button. "Morning." She said politely. I nodded and returned a smile. She looked familiar and I had probably met her once or twice before.
When we reached her floor, she got out after nodding a good bye at me. "Must work in photography." I thought as the levator continued up to 39. When I finally reached my floor, I marched my way past the front desk, through the main office and down a corridor to my office, where my dedicated assistant was waiting for me.
"Ms. Williams." She greeted. I nodded as I went into my office. She followed giving me the rundown on what had been happening since speaking to me 15 minutes ago. I nodded as she filled me in on the Vogue contract and one of our publishers Wendy Samuels. Taking my coat off, I hung it in the cupboard, then taking my handbag, I hung it on the back of my wooden door. I waited until she was done before asking about my calls. "No. Nothing" She shook her head. "Okay," I said biting my lip as I took my lip. "Well thats all." She nodded at me once again before leaving my office, closing the door silently behind her.
