They were specifically and systematically hunting him, probably to absorb his energy, though he couldn't be sure yet.

In any case, the trial requirement for him is most likely to defeat these creatures, which Ezra believes is proven by the fact that he was blocked by a barrier and forced to take the crystal ball at the start.

Still, the environment of this third section surprised him the most.
