Chapter 21: Cup of Blood

MILO’S POV

I’m drinking wine with Nori’s blood in it, and every sip burns through my body like a forest fire through land ravaged by drought. I’ve taken a handful of gulps, and each builds on the one before it. The first wave of pain gripped me for a second and then passed, leaving no residual sensitivity behind. Now the pain lingers after each swallow, tingling as if I’m being scratched from the inside out.

It’s going to be a long night. I need something to keep my mind off the mounting discomfort. As one more drink scorches a path down my throat and out into my every agitated nerve, I clench my teeth until I can talk to Nori.

“So you rose a vampire and I’ll be made?” I ask, wanting to get the terminology right before I have to navigate this unfamiliar world.

“I am an original. Yes, I rose after death and you’ll be a turned vampire,” she says, sitting next to me and running a hand over the stubble on my head. It feels good in this fog of pain.
