  "Welcome, Desiree Dawson," a woman whom I could not see her face said, and I swallowed hard.

  "Don't be frightened, Desiree," the woman said, taking off her hoodie, and it was Janet's mother. Other members began to take off their hoodies, and I was shocked at what I saw. Every Moon I knew was there. Aunt Margret, my mother's neighbours that owned the food truck, Tim my friend, some workers at the packhouse, and some enforcers. I was in shock. Someone brought me a white hooded robe, but I refused to collect it.

  "What is the meaning of this?" I asked as politely as I could manage because I felt hoodwinked at that moment, but I did not want to come off as offensive to anyone.

  "The Uprising," Janet's mother, Kendra Lawson, said, and I swallowed. She pushed up her chest with pride and looked around her, then cleared her throat to speak.
