Chapter 41

Tommy

"Scared?" Tommy's voice out more serious than he'd intended. While he did want her prepared, he didn't want her jumping at shadows either. The taxi had been a false alarm.

Whenever Ruby dodged low hanging branches, he did a sweep of the area around them to ensure no one followed. Brady was a native New Yorker, so tromping through the swamps wouldn't be his usual hangout. Still, they needed to be cautious and travel on high alert. The swamp wasn't like strolling down a sidewalk or maybe it was with the crocks and snakes, it'd be like walking through the worse part of New York at night.

"Not scared, but I'd prefer not to be dinner for the mosquitoes." She swatted at the air.

Bullfrogs croaked in the background while crickets chirruped. The water's murky greenish tint hid lord knows how many crocodiles. His boots oozed into the mud. He'd forgotten how much fun the swamp was...alive with animals and trees and plants in every shade of emerald imaginable.
