Chapter 48

Ruby

Ruby's heart pounding like it had been a freshman marching band's bass drum. Her hand clutched Brady's cell phone so tight she worried she'd break it. The empty tent and sleeping bag mocking her. "What do you want?"

He chuckled over the line. "You've eluded me twice, but I won't let you get away this time. I've done my research on you, thanks to Westridge, I know all about you and your sister."

Tears glistened in her eyes as she swallowed past her raw throat. "If you touch her, you'll have more enemies gunning for you than Al Capone after a bank robbery."

Crackling sounded over the line as though he were shifting papers. "Not from you Ruby Terry, daughter of convicted felon. Faking your death at nine, such cleverness, but I found you now, haven't I? Come out of the tent or I'll come in after you or rip holes in it with my 9mm...your choice."
