Chapter 1

1940's

The Germans were moving closer and closer to the secret American (Hospital) Aid Station between Rennes (Ren) and Paris. Which seemed to be sending everyone except for a few into a panic.

As I was just finishing washing my hands and getting a drink from the well just outside the aid station, one of the nurses came up to me, which caused me to look up and ask. "What can I do for you Kate?" Which brought her (Kate) out of her musings. And she replied with a question of her own. "Cheyenne, you're not panicking?"

"Oh I wouldn't say that I'm calm, I just can't show it so it doesn't cause everyone else to panic even more, especially because I'm the head doctor and also the oldest medical personnel at this aid station, so because everyone looks up to me for guidance then I have to appear at least outwardly calm." I answered, right before I take a deep breath to calm my nerves and my racing heart. "What if they find us?" She asked with panic in her voice. "Then they do. But...." I replied with a pause, for effect and because it caused me to think of Klaus and what he might be doing right this minute, also where he was at this moment.

I missed him really bad, especially right now, because about a month ago I got conformation that I am carrying our child, and it has been about three or four months since we've seen each other. "But, What?!" Cried Kate, in a panic again. "Oh, Nothing...." I said, knowing that it would get her dander up in exasperation. "Nothing. Really! You know you can't keep anything from me, very often." Exclaimed Kate in outrage. "I know, I know, fine go get Sharon...." I replied, still thinking about my husband and his brother who were stationed somewhere on the western front. And what Sharon would say when she found out that she was going to be an Aunt.

Sharon is my best friend and also my sister in-law as she is married to Frederick, Klaus younger brother. I had been standing there leaning against the well for about ten minutes when Sharon came out of the building that we were using as a hospital. As soon as she saw me she rushed over to where I was. "What can I do for you? Kate said that you wanted to talk to me." She asked when she reached me. "Yes, I do. Have you heard that a battalion of German soldiers are heading this way and should be here by early morning." I reply staring up at the sky. "Yes, I heard and am worried about it also. Also how are you doing. I know you haven't been yourself lately." She answered turning to look at me.

"There's something I want to tell you." I say as I also turn to look at her. "I am pregnant and am about three and a half months along and Klaus doesn't know. You are the first other then me to know, so by the way you're going to be an Aunt." At this last bit of news she just stares at me for about five minutes. Before she shakes off the shock and in excitement pulls me into her arms for a congratulatory hug.

We stand there talking for about two hours, as everyone else at the hospital understands that we needed to talk privately without interruption. As soon as we were done talking we went back into the hospital and got back to work. At about four in the afternoon Sharon and I let the others know that we were going to go to the market for some supplies and headed out.

When we reached the bustling market we split up so we could get done faster. I was just about done with my section of the shopping list when I saw a booth that was selling fabrics and accessories, and quickly went over to see what they had as I was thinking of my baby I carried within me. I was just about finished at the fabric booth when some fabric caught my eye. It instantly reminded me of Klaus and the first time we met. When I was in Germany on holiday. So I quickly bought it and the other stuff I needed then went back to finishing the shopping list.

As I was just getting the last item on my side of the list someone came running into the market place shouting and yelling that the Germans were coming and were almost on the out skirts of town. When I heard this I quickly finished paying for my supplies and went to find Sharon who had also heard and was coming to find me. As soon as we got to each other we quickly hurried back to hospital, where we that worked at the hospital had some rooms in the back.

We had just gotten to the main entrance to the hospital when it flew open and one of the other doctors came rushing out to help us get our supplies inside and the doors closed and bolted. When we were finally inside and we had calmed down we all that weren't on duty quickly headed back into the living space so we could put away the stuff we had just gotten. And because I was on dinner duty, I quickly focused on getting our dinner made so that when those that were just about to go on duty could eat and those who were just coming off a shift. I had just finished setting the table and was about to let everyone know that dinner was ready when everyone came into the dining-room. We were just finishing up the cleaning when there was a loud pounding on the front door of the hospital.

As the oldest medical doctor on staff it was my duty go greet the guests, but as I was about to, Sharon stopped me and shook her head "No" and then turned to the oldest male doctor and motioned for him to go see who it was. At this I quickly turned to glare at her in question and all she did was motion to my belly and it quickly clicked, she was trying to protect me and my baby. So I immediately gave her a grateful hug and smile. After waiting in the dining-room for about five or so minutes Felix came back and he wasn't alone. With him were two German soldiers and they wanted all of us to come with them to the front of the hospital.

I had just stood up when a wave of nausea came over me and I bearly made it to a trash can that was across the room in a corner. Before everything that I had just eaten came back up. And what I didn't know at first was that because it was taking so long for us to come to the front, the Colonel had sent a Captain to come see what was taking so long. And the Captain happened to be none other then my husband and he had just gotten into the room when I reached the trash can. At seeing me on the floor bent over the trash he quickly rushed over to me and knelt down beside me. It was only when I felt the strong all to familiar loving hands on my back that I jumped and quickly turned my head to see my beautiful husband kneeling on the floor beside me with Sharon worried a little ways away.

When Klaus saw her standing there he quickly motioned her over to us and in a quiet voice so no one other than us could hear him, he said. "Hello dear sister, would you be so kind as to get me a cool wet rag so I can wash her face.?" At this she quickly nodded her head and went to do as he had said. When it was just the two of us in the corner so no one else could over hear us he spoke to me. "I am so very glad and happy to see you, but this is not how I was expecting to greet you. I figured it would be a more romantic home coming. But just as I'm following my Colonels orders I find my wife with her face over a trash can hacking up her insides. What is wrong my love? Are you sick?" At hearing this I just calaps into his arms. Holding on to him as hard as I can. At this he gathers me up into his arms and carries me over to one of the chairs at the table. As soon as he sits down with me still on his lap and in his arms. I quietly lean towards his ear and whisper. "Oh, my heart. I am not really sick sick. I am carrying our child." When I finish speaking I snuggle deeper into his arms and hold on.

After about five minutes Sharon comes back with the rag and with her are four more soldiers. As soon as they see Klaus sitting on a chair with me in his lap their faces go slack in shock. And Klaus quickly explains that he had just come into the room when he saw the woman on the floor heaving into the trash can so he quickly rushed over to see what was wrong. After hearing this he motioned for them to take everyone out except for Sharon and I and to send his brother in to be here to help him if needed. When he said this he looked over at Sharon and winked. At this the other soldiers nodded and get everyone else out of the room. When they are all out Sharon comes over with the rag and hands it to him so he can clean up my face and neck. He was just finishing up when Frederick came into the room. As soon as he saw Sharon he quickly shut the door to the dining-room and then rushed over to her and gathered her up into his arms and swung her around. She had her arms around his neck crying and sobbing. As Frederick was trying to soothe her another wave of nausea came over me and I was bearly able to stumble to the trash can when I started to dry heave because all of my food had already come up, as I got to the trash can Klaus came rushing over to help me so I didn't end up hurting myself.

Klaus:

Our battalion had just reached the bustling little town a few miles out of Paris when one of the Frenchman that were for the German occupation came up to us and said that there was a American Aid station in town and that he could show us where it was. At this one of my soldiers were sent back to find the Colonel to see what he wanted to do.

When Colonel Buller came up to see what was going on. I quickly explained what the man was saying. But deep in my heart I was hoping that we would just leave this little town alone as there was no military value in taking this town. And that Cheyenne was working at the Aid Station. So I was hoping that he would leave it alone. But no such luck. We were ordered to move forward into the town and take over the Aid Station. After the order was given all I could do was just keep a record of what the battalion was doing so that I could get it to my contact.

For I am secretly working for the American Army as I was Commissioned as a Captain when I saw some of the atrocities that Hitler was doing and it made me sick so I went to the only American that I knew (my wife) and told her that I wanted to help the allies stop Hitler so she helped me get in touch with the American OSS (Office of Strategic Services), my brother is also a spy for the Americans. As soon as we reached the town the Colonel split up the battalion and most of us were sent to capture the hospital.

When we pulled up in front of the hospital a Sargent was sent to try the door. when was it discovered that the door was locked he banged on it, to get someone's attention. After a little while a man dressed in shirt, pants, and tie with a white lab coat came to the door and opened it into the main waiting room. So we could enter and explain what we were doing there. As soon as we got inside. I asked the man who he was.

And he replied. "My name is Felix Burford and I am a civilian and have been living in France for about ten years now. My wife is French. And I was born in Louisiana and my mother is Cajan French so I already knew French before I came to France on holiday once I got my doctor's license." At this the Colonel spoke up. "We have come to requisition this hospital so I want all hospital personnel to come up to the front.

"You and you" Pointing at two privates. "go with the good doctor and get everyone else out here." With that they nodded their heads and were lead back towards the back by Felix. As we were waiting I headed towards the doctors' offices when I saw a name on one of the doors that made my heart stop. It couldn't be, but I knew it was. The name on the door read: Dr. Cheyenne G. Taylor. so I quickly stopped at the door and opened it.

What I saw there was almost the most beautiful sight a husband could see, the most beautiful being his wife and children. But were I stood was my wife's office and on the walls were pictures of her and her family. After a few minutes I go over to her desk and in the bottom drawer under some stuff I see a picture that warms my heart. It is a picture of the two of us on our wedding day, three years ago. And on the glass over my chest are the words: I Love You My Husband. When I was about to put the picture back I kissed my fingers and pressed them to the glass.

After about 15 minutes of looking around her office and taking in her sent I left the office making sure that the door was locked so that nobody else could come in and headed back to the waiting room. When I got back to the waiting room the Colonel looked up from where he had sat down with question in his eyes and I just shook my head "No".

About five minutes later the hospital personnel still hadn't shown up so he sent me back to see what was going on. I had just gotten to the door of dining-room when I saw Chy rush over to a trash can in the corner of the room and start throwing up. At this I quickly rushed over to where she was kneeling over the trash can heaving up her insides. As soon as I reached her I knelt down beside her and put my hands and her back in comfort and love. When my hands touched her back she jumped and looked over to see who it was. At seeing me she calaps into my arms and holds on as tight as she can.

As I am holding her I look up to see my sister in-law standing a few meters away and motion for her to come over to us. When she is close enough I whisper. "Hello dear sister, would you be so kind as to get me a cool wet rag so I can wash her face.?" At hearing this she quickly nods her head and leaves to go get the rag. When it was just the two of us in the corner so no one else could over hear us I spoke to her. "I am so very glad and happy to see you, but this is not how I was expecting to greet you. I figured it would be a more romantic home coming. But just as I'm following my Colonels orders I find my wife with her face over a trash can hacking up her insides. What is wrong my love? Are you sick?"

At hearing this she just calaps into my arms even deeper and holds on until it's all most painful. And I gathered her up into my arms and carried her over to a chair at the table. Where I sit down with her on my lap and in my arms. She quickly leans into me and whispers the most shocking and beautiful news a husband could ever hear. "Oh, my heart. I am not really sick sick. I am carrying our child." As she finishs speaking she snuggles deeper into my arms and chest. At this news I look down into her face and she nods her head in confirmation.

After about five minutes Sharon comes back with the rag and with her are four more soldiers. As soon as they see me sitting on a chair with Chy in my lap their faces go slack in shock. And I quickly explains that I had just come into the room when he saw the woman on the floor heaving into the trash can so I quickly rushed over to see what was wrong. After hearing this I motioned for them to take everyone out except for Sharon and Chy and to send my brother in to be here to help me if needed. When I said this, I looked over at Sharon and winked. At this the other soldiers nodded and got everyone else out of the room.

When they are all out, Sharon comes over with the rag and hands it to me so I can clean up Cheyenne's face and neck. I was just finishing up when Frederick came into the room. As soon as he saw Sharon he quickly shut the door to the dining-room and then rushed over to her and gathered her up into his arms and swung her around. She had her arms around his neck crying and sobbing. As Frederick was trying to soothe her another wave of nausea came over Cheyenne and she was bearly able to stumble to the trash can when she started to dry heave because all of her food had already come up, as she got to the trash can I came rushing over to help her so she didn't end up hurting herself.

After a few minutes of her still dry heaving, Sharon and Frederick noticed us on the floor beside the trash can and came rushing over to see what was wrong. And I just motioned for the rag that was on the table. When the rag was in my hand I quickly focused on wiping Cheyenne's face again. After her face was clean I pulled her back into my arms and lap and sat on the floor with her beside the trash can for in case she needed to lean over it again. After about five of just sitting there holding her in my arms. She finally picked up her head and looked at each of us and said. "I think that I will be ok now, as I don't feel nauseous anymore, but will let you know if I start feeling nauseous again." Then she looks back at Frederick. "By the way Uncle how are you?" At this Frederick looks at me in confusion, then he notices where my hands are resting.

At seeing this he it finally dawned on him what he was seeing. So he looks at us with question in his eyes and we both nodded our heads in confirmation. With that he comes over to us and gives us each a hug. And Cheyenne gives us some more news. "I am about three and a half months along. So in just under six months Klaus is going to be a father." "Wow." We all said in unison. With this we get up and head out into the waiting room. When we got there one of the nurses came rushing over to Cheyenne demanding to know what was wrong and why she was so pale.

Even though there were about eight soldiers guarding the other doctors and nurses and that wasn't including the Colonel. At seeing her Chy just smiled at her and said. "It's alright Kate, I think that I'm coming down with something and my body wasn't too happy with what I had for dinner." With those words all I could do was smile softly to myself and keep my mouth shut. When I noticed that Kate was still trying to care for Cheyenne I turned to Sharon and motioned for to come over and help get Chy to a chair as she was starting to look like she was about to throw up.

At this she (Sharon) rushed over to her and got her to the couch that was against the wall. As soon as she was on the couch Sharon opened the foot rest so that she could lay down. While all of this was happening Kate kept hovering as if she was going to take over her care. After about five minutes, Kate seemed to notice me standing beside Cheyenne and jumped, and exclaimed in shock. "What's he doing right here?" Then turned to me and said. "Go. Shoo. We don't want your kind over here." At hearing this Cheyenne and Sharon shared a look.

Then Sharon said in Navajo in a way that it looked like she was talking to herself. "She is doing better and it doesn't look to be returning. You can go if you need, as she is fine." I nod my head as if thinking to myself and stay right where I am, at Cheyenne's head, and ignore Kate as if she isn't even there. At seeing that I wouldn't move she huffed and started muttering to herself as best she could while still being in terror at all the soldiers being in the room and building.

When she was distracted with something Cheyenne reached up and touched my hand that I had on the back of the couch beside her head. Squeezing it in love and reassurances, as if to let me know that she really was ok. With this I was really tempted to lean down and kiss her, but because of the other soldiers, doctors, and nurses I had to just squeeze her hand right back. When this was all over and everyone was either in bed or on duty I was going to take my wife and show her just how much love and missed her. The only reason I hadn't already done it was because the only people who knew that we were married was my brother and his wife Sharon.

It was about three hours when everyone was situated or asleep. I quietly picked up Cheyenne as she had finally fallen asleep and took her to her living quarters, where I quickly got us ready for bed and we fell asleep. I cannot even explain the feeling of going to sleep with your loved one in your arms, especially when you have been away from each other. There are no words to describe it.

The next morning I woke up to Cheyenne snuggled in close to my side and sweating from the heat radiating off the two of us. Quietly without waking her up I slowly got out of the bed and then leaned over and kissed her forehead. With this done I headed into the bathroom and got ready for the day. As soon as I was ready I went in search of some coffee and something for Cheyenne. I had just stepped into the kitchen area when I saw private Byler getting the coffee pot going. He turned and nearly dropped the pot, he jumped so high at seeing me in the doorway.

As soon as he had the pot on to heat, he spoke. "You scared me Captain. And the coffee will be done in a few minutes." "Sorry for scaring you Private, and thank you." I replied going farther into the room. While the coffee was still brewing I quickly focused on getting some toast and a cup of tea made for Cheyenne. When everything was ready I headed back to Chy's rooms. The sight that greeted me was the most precious thing that I had ever seen. I quickly and quietly slipped farther into the room and set the tray with our food on her nightstand and leaned over and gave her a kiss. At this she startled awake then saw me and relaxed. "I brought you some toast and ginger tea." I said motioning at the tray on her nightstand while picking up my cup of coffee.

At this she sat up with her back against the headboard, and I handed her her cup of tea and a piece of toast, then sat down on the side the bed. When my coffee and her food was gone I pulled her onto my lap and held her like that for a while then looked down at her and she looked up at me and we leaned together and I kissed her. After a while we came up for air and I put her on the bed beside me and put an arm around her shoulders for about five minutes then she said that she needed to get ready for the day so we separated and she got up and headed to the bathroom while I gathered up the tray and our dishes and took them back to the kitchen.
