On a quiet loop of country road in the middle of nowhere sits the town of Mannington, with it's one town sheriff and it's groves of trees, old cemetery and quiet countrified people.

But unseen to most is the real town that sits underneath, a town filled with people with dark secrets, serial killers and lawlessness.  Then one day when a lonely old woman is removed from her house by a corrupt minister something invades the town, something unseen, unstoppable with a hunger for people with dark secrets.

Guilty of terrible crimes himself, Sheriff Clyde grows more and more afraid as victims keep turning up.  Trying to keep his own secrets hidden while searching for answers, sheriff Dinkle lives in constant fear that it will come for him, like the others, not killed by human hands but by something that can be anywhere, something that can raise the dead, something lurking, waiting, and striking night and day, something that wont stop as long as there are people with dark secrets...…….something that lives....in the trees.

Clyde was desperate to get to that graveyard before the terror of Mannington got to him, but it seemed like every damned time he got any time to think, his entire force got stuck with overtime because of loony tune people committing crime or being stupid. He had one year remaining as sheriff before the elections and no intention of running again. 


Harold and Derrol could not avoid bullying people and he found himself putting them in jail again and again till he had a nasty chat with them and informed them that there was a force out there with their name on it's list and to get their shit together before it tried more efficiently to kill them. 


Ed was packing to leave town but he was jittery, nervous and he avoided going to town since about three hundred church people wanted his head.
