The Second Shift

"Are you sure he's okay here?"

Zev turned to Loel. Zev made sure all the windows and curtains were closed.

"What do you mean?" Zev asked. We were looking at Jody, whose moaning was silenced by intense pain. That's what it feels like when the body isn't used to shifting. It stretched the bones and flesh as if they were going to die from the pain. Even Loel and Zev felt the same way when just starting. Now that they are watching Jody, they feel the pain again.

"She'll be hurt more if she can't get her moan out of her mouth. Why don't we take her to the cave? The one we went to before?" Loel suggested.

"I want to do that too, but the firecracker, as long as it's going off and the new shifters hear it, it's unsafe for Jody. Someone could see us in that area. You know what kind of people are in the cave, and Jody will be the same when that's out in the open."
