Lin Feng stood in the doorway of the shopping mall, tightly gripping the edge of the door. His narrowed gaze swept over the frozen scene in front of him.
He took in the sight of the shattered walls and cracked earth. He noted the blackened bones lying on the ground and the golden fire blazing across the landscape. Lin Feng had to focus on taking deep breaths as he looked over each person in the crowd, anger bubbling in his chest.
Finally, he turned his gaze onto the only thing still moving in the frozen landscape. A small fox, bleeding and panting in pain from a deep gash on her chest, lying in a crater full of rubble.
There was a loud screech of protesting metal and a crack of breaking glass as Lin Feng's grip on the edge of the sliding glass door finally became too much. Ignoring the falling glass, he pried his fingers out of the twisted metal of the door and stalked forward into the destroyed courtyard.
The fire hanging in the air moved smoothly out of his way as he walked forward, bones cracking beneath his feet.
When Lin Feng reached the side of Shu Ping, he walked slowly around to look at his face, still frozen in a vicious snarl. Lin Feng again took a deep breath as he looked at Shu Ping and the silent group of people behind him. His eyes lingered for a second longer on Yu Qingwei.
Lin Feng had never harmed another human being before, but the boiling anger in his chest was begging him to do so now. He kept staring at Shu Ping, still frozen in the midst of attacking, as the rage burned ever hotter in his chest.
Lin Feng had killed countless demonic beasts before. Was this really that different? Especially in a world where those same demonic beasts could have evolved intelligence given enough time. Would Lin Feng hesitate to kill a Core Formation demonic beast?
Lin Feng had come from a peaceful world. A world where the rule of law solved these kinds of things. Should he really take the matter into his own hands?
Lin Feng looked back at Mei, still panting in pain from her injuries, staring at him with relief and overwhelming trust in her eyes. Lin Feng looked back at Shu Ping's snarling face. He looked behind Shu Ping and saw Yu Qingwei's excited face.
Lin Feng's face hardened.
——
Zhang Fei was shocked. The battle between a Core Formation beast and cultivator was child's play to him and he cared nothing for it. As the only Soul Reformation cultivator of the Great Yan Dynasty, a battle on such a low level wouldn't harm him even if he stood still and let them hit him.
Yang Wen and Wang Mu's description of the shop owner made Zhang Fei assume that the owner was at the Unity of Heaven and Earth Realm. While such a realm was impossible for Zhang Fei to win against, it wasn't impossible for him to delay and escape if things were to go bad. This is why the Emperor felt comfortable sending Zhang Fei to investigate.
But this was not Unity of Heaven and Earth.
Zhang Fei felt panic as the world stopped. Everything was silent. Everything was still. He couldn't move.
The power shown over the nomological laws of the world was staggering. As a Soul Reformation Sage, he could already control the laws of the world to a small extent. He could make the head of a spear unstoppable for a short period of time. He could make his armor unbreakable in a small area right before an attack landed. Anyone below the Soul Reformation Realm would be killed by him with a single finger, no matter how much power they brought to bear.
A Unity Venerable was much stronger than this. They could control the laws surrounding their body completely. Their armor would forever be unbreakable as long as they willed it. Only someone with greater control of the laws than them could harm them. Even so, their ability to manipulate the laws farther away from them was limited and short-term.
What Zhang Fei was experiencing right now was not limited and, as time went on, it was not short-term.
Zhang Fei heard the screech of metal followed by footsteps. Each step seemed to echo in the silence as they grew closer and closer. Zhang Fei's panic grew.
Finally, the footsteps passed him by. The footsteps walked up to Shu Ping, and Zhang Fei finally saw the shop owner.
To Zhang Fei's eyes, Lin Feng exuded a horrifying power. The nomological laws helplessly splintered and shattered in his presence. Where Zhang Fei had to struggle to bend the laws in a small area, the laws around Lin Feng simply broke, seemingly without Lin Feng exerting any effort. They would never return to normal without someone deliberately repairing them.
Lin Feng stood in front of Shu Ping and the surviving imperial delegation.
Zhang Fei had been so confident before, but now his heart felt like it was in his throat as Lin Feng silently looked them over.
Time passed as Lin Feng stood in front of them. It wasn't that long but it felt like an eternity to the imperial delegation.
Finally, Lin Feng shook his head with a stony look on his face and reached out.
With a flick of his fingers, Shu Ping, suddenly unfrozen, gasped, and then there was a cut-off scream as his chest was crushed.
Shu Ping flew backward past the still crowd and slammed into the old gates of the destroyed courtyard house with a loud thud. The huge decrepit gates were finally knocked off their hinges and Shu Ping fell to the ground.
There was a gurgling choking sound as Shu Ping struggled on the ground, limbs broken, ribs shattered. The wet gasps and shuffling continued in the silent courtyard for a few long moments before going quiet.
Yu Qingwei let out a yelp as he could suddenly move again.
"You! You!" Yu Qingwei tripped and fell backward as he tried to get away from Lin Feng. "My father-"
"Your father?" Lin Feng spoke for the first time. The whispered words caused the spiritual energy to shake, leaving a buzzing in everyone's ears.
"Aaah," Yu Qingwei groaned in pain, "I am the son of Duke Yu of Great Yan!"
"Oh? Are you begging?" Lin Feng laughed. "Why are you begging already? I haven't even done anything to you yet."
"I- I- My father is not someone you can offend!" Yu Qingwei stuttered.
"What a guilty conscience. You do deserve to die."
"He's a Nascent Soul cultivator! You can't-"
"I don't care if he is an immortal who has descended from heaven." Lin Feng shook his head. "If he comes and begs, I might forgive him for raising someone like you."
Yu Qingwei was speechless, he had never met someone who was so dismissive of his father.
"Great Yan-"
Lin Feng laughed again and cut him off. Raising his hand, he clenched his fist and, in an instant, Yu Qingwei was gone. There was nothing left but a bloody puddle on the ground.
Lin Feng turned around and went to Mei, ignoring the rest of the crowd.
Picking her up, he grimaced as he looked at the bloody wound on her chest. The bleeding was stopped with a thought, but healing would take time.
"Are you okay?"
"Big Brother," Mei stopped and hesitated, "My demonic core is damaged. I… might not be able to reach the Nascent Soul Realm and help you get customers anymore."
"You don't have to worry about that." Lin Feng's heart hurt as he heard Mei worrying about not being able to help him. "Big Brother will fix it."
The urgency of upgrading the shopping mall had now increased. Before, he had wanted to upgrade it for entertainment. Now, he had to upgrade it so that it would sell medicine.
Lin Feng felt helpless as he thought of how many points and customers he needed before he could get another store. Then, he remembered the crowd of people standing frozen behind him.
Zhang Fei felt fear as Lin Feng turned around once again, looking at them with cold calculating eyes.
