Accusations and Apologies

No one even batted an eye toward Daphne. No matter how hard she pounded against the windowsill or how loud she screamed, the lashes continued to fall on the girl. 

Her voice grew hoarse, but she continued shouting even as the crack of the whip gradually drowned out her voice. 

"Princess, this isn't the Kingdom of Eversun." He reminded her. "They will not listen to your commands." 

Her knuckles whitened. She tried to convince herself that they couldn't hear her, but secretly, she knew that he was right. 

"Without my command, they will not dare to stop what they were told to do." Leaning closer, he forcibly shut the windows once more, this time bolting them closed. "They're not going to listen to the Princess of Eversun, and you're only a lowly consort here in the Northern Courts. Your words mean next to nothing here." 

She raised her hands to fight back, but he caught her firmly by the wrist. 

"Why do you keep challenging my authority?"
