A Lonely Soul

Daphne rubbed her eyes. Maybe it was just a play of light, and she had just caught a glint of something else. 

She stared intently at that pair of life-like eyes, waiting and simultaneously fearing for something to happen. 

It had been a long time, and her own eyes were beginning to tire. Perhaps it had just been a really long day for her, and she was seeing things that didn't exist in reality. 

At that split moment, the portrait blinked again. 

"Who are you?" Daphne's heart leapt, and she pulled out her dagger. There was no denying it now. There was definitely something behind the portrait. "What are you?"

The portrait remained silent, making it appear as if Daphne was just screaming to a wall. 

Even the blue light orb from earlier was no where in sight.
